The Sunshine Kings

The Sunshine Kings Jazz Band Young Guns

Top London band “Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings” swing by OJC. Jazz inspired by the music of New Orleans, the singing and dancing of the 1920’s, the dixieland and trad revivals in America and the UK since then, and by the musicians we work with here and now from all over the world. The Sunshine Kings brings it all together into a band that makes people of all ages dance, clap, tap toes, and go home with a smile. Great for dancing, great for listening, great for anyone wanting to have a good time.

The Magnificent Seven Jazz Band
Formed in 2013 by a nucleus of musicians from the Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball bands, the Magnificent Seven Jazz Band comprises some the most sought-after and successful musicians on the jazz scene today. Performing a wide range of jazz styles through well crafted arrangements, this band of versatile musicians successfully blends music from every jazz genre into an exciting and approachable package.

Calling on their experience of performing with Europe’s most influential jazz bands of the last sixty years, the Magnificent Seven combines a wealth of experience with youthful exuberance. Paying homage to the great jazz masters of the early jazz period as well as keeping alive the sounds of the swing era, the Magnificent Seven’s repertoire also celebrates the jazz revival of the 1950’s, tipping their hat to the great bands of Barber, Ball and Bilk. This band takes no prisoners! They play a varied repertoire, with compositions and arrangements by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, Errol Garner, Fats Waller, Chucho Valdez, Paquito D’Rivera and many more.
Line-up:
Amy Roberts – clarinet, flute and saxophones
Richard Exall – clarinet and saxophones
Ian Bateman – trombone
Ben Cummings – trumpet
Nick Millward – drums
Bill Coleman – bass
Craig Milverton – piano

How do we do it for just £12/£10 in advance?!?!

Hoping to see you on 7th June for The Sunshine Kings!
Cheers,
Alan

Burt Butler’s Jazz Pilgrims at The Two Brewers, Whitstable, Kent

two-brewers-pic-webb

It was great to catch up with Burt Butler and his Jazz Pilgrims on Friday, 28th May, during a weekend visit to my old stomping grounds in East Kent. These two YouTubes feature The Pilgrims at just one of their venues, their regular Whitstable “Two Brewers” Friday haunt.

Quite an atmosphere with crowded fans close up to the band or peering round the huge central chimney breast and the musicians ducking and diving behind timber columns. But Burt and John Finch held firm on centre stage. That’s the magic of jazz!

Amy-Walton

Thank you, Dave Cottle, for introducing South African singer/song writer,

“Now relocated to London, Amy delights fans with her stunning interpretations of the Great American Song Book and jazz standards, original compositions, Latin, African and Zulu songs.

“Known her for unique sense of harmony, Amy also plays piano, composes original material of different genres, and gives a new perspective to Jazz standards with her arranging style.”

Since moving to London, Amy has recorded with Laurence Cottle and Ralph Salmins with Richard Cottle producing the music.

“Oriental Strut” – Tuba Skinny at Fest Jazz, 2014

Tuba Skinny filmed in the Grand Marquee at Fest Jazz, 2014.

Tuba Skinny took Fest Jazz by storm in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, Brittany, in July, 2014. The packed grand marquee audience was spellbound. This was just one of just two numbers I could film in the marquee without fans and dancers blocking the view. Live jazz at its best and not a chance of “Take Twos”. But then that’s what Fest Jazz is about: fun, great jazz and DANCING.

Come back soon Tuba Skinny.

And fans, why not book now for Fest Jazz 2016!

Jazz&Jazz YouTubes Feature: Bohém Ragtime Jazz Band at The Bay Jazz Club, Hertfordshire

Having followed Hungary’s Bohém Ragtime Jazz Band for some months and featured them regularly on Jazz&Jazz, when I discovered that Botany Bay Jazz Club had booked them for a Friday Night Special on 6th May, I seized the opportunity to see them live – and, with bandleader Tamás Ittzés’ and the Bay’s permission, to film them.

It was an evening of outstanding jazz. The Club was packed with their own members and guests from The Amersham Jazz Club who had made the journey to share the experience.

So here is my selection of Jazz&Jazz YouTubes which tell their own story. Enjoy!
