Harbourside Jazz at Seaside Shuffle – Bands, Brolly Parades and Ramsgate’s Beauty Queen

The sun shone, the bands played, the brollies paraded and Ramsgate’s Beauty Queen and Princess smiled for the cameras. Jazz fans revelled in the events and onlooking holiday makers and local residents were enthralled by the fun and frolics!

I overheard one happy parent say to his youngster, “This is old time jazz! From New Orleans.
It’s great fun!”

Without doubt The Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival, now just in it’s fifth year, is putting New Orleans Traditional Jazz back on the map in the UK’s far south-east. So I want to pay tribute to the small but very active organising committee for their sterling work. They prefer to remain incognito so I’ll introduce them only by their first names, Ron, Chris, John and Paul.

“Richard’s Rascals” played on the Sunday, not quite such a bright day but “When You’re Smiling” made all the difference: Tony Richard (tpt), Dave Corsby (clt), Martin Rawbone (tmb), Nick Rawbone (dms), Neil Francis (bass), Dave Robinson (vibes).

Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle is

The
Summer Fun Festival!

Take Red Hot & Blue’s performance on a blazing July Saturday afternoon – ready to strip off at the outset!  And just as I was about to film them in their smart white jackets. Witness for yourselves the results on this YouTube. I simply couldn’t get my lens camera up to par in time – hence my objections and the shaky start. Great fun and despite the theatricals, great music!

Only at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle!

But later they condescended to my request to film them fully clad – yet again catching me on the hop so that I missed the opening bars of “The Postman’s Lament” – and my comment that sitting right next to me was, not Postman Pat, but Postman Pete – an avid Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fan.

Where else but at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle!

“The Weave”

UPDATE ON THE WEAVE’S SPICE OF LIFE GIG

Unfortunately The Weave’s launch gig at “The Spice of Life”, Soho, London, on the 9th July was sabotaged by the London Tube Strike and only the bravest fans made the hazardous journey  – see the comment from my friend Paul Goddard below. But Paul sent me two photos he took at the launch and I am only two pleased to reproduce them here to add just a little more publicity for this great band.

TheWeave1

TheWeave2
My original post published in April read:

Back in December, 2013, I posted a Jazz&Jazz feature entitled “Cold, Wet and Sockless? Entertaining Nevertheless!” with the introduction: “The Weave is a Liverpool based Jazz Sextet which veers more towards modern jazz, but with their own entertaining, exuberant and amusing twist as demonstrated in their  video, “Cold Wet and Sockless”.

Starring at London's Spice of Life. The Weave will launch their new album there on 6th June.

Starring at London’s Spice of Life. The Weave will launch their new album there on 6th June.

One reviewer even described The Weave as “Satchmo-like … you can easily picture yourself sitting in a dark and smokey American jazz club. This is no wonder, since the two trumpeters have played in a New Orleans-style band for some years.”

Perhaps my personal preference leans towards – not so much UK and European Trad – but New Orleans Revivalist Jazz. However, my priority is to promote live jazz, today’s jazz, and particularly jazz played by our emerging new generation of jazz bands, with their own fans in their own preferred venues, and their own “twist”, yet with profound echoes of past great eras.

The Weave Band Leader Martin Smith emailed me: “Although I guess you can say our music is fairly contemporary, I personally don’t deal in those terms… there is only music, regardless of when or where it was made. The power of New Orleans Jazz to lift the human spirit is unrivalled for me, and just as potent and relevant now as it ever was.”

Today “The Weaves” soulmate Derek Lovelady emailed me about their second album which is due for release in June: It’s probably not got owt on it pertinent to your website, but I thought you may like to take a peek at its cover artwork and some amusing photos here:  facebook.com/theweave3.”

Not pertinent to my website, Derek? Let’s be the judge of that when the album is released on 6th July. In fact, Jazzers, Martin tells me “The Weave” have a launch gig booked at “The Spice of Life”, Soho, London, on the 9th July. So be there if you can!

Meanwhile, jazz fans, discover more about “The Weave” on their website.

“Climax Rag” “On A Coconut Island” with Annie Hawkins’ Jazzmen at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle’s Festival

Fans out in force for Annie Hawkins' jazzmen

Fans out in force for Annie Hawkins’ jazzmen.

Annie Hawkins and her Jazzmen arrived in Ramsgate on Saturday evening, 11th July, at the height of the weekend’s heatwave. Seaside Shuffle Jazz Fans packed The Small Boat Owners Club to the gunnels.

So much so that in introducing Annie and the band, Mike Pointon paid Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fans the huge compliment of comparing them and the club with his favourite New Orleans jazz hot spots, adding “… in fact it’s hotter here than in New Orleans – and over at the bar there are even slices of refreshing water melon!”

Band

L to R: Mike Pointon (trombone), Annie (bass), Ken Sims (trumpet), Nick Ward (drums), John Law (clarinet), Richard Smith (guitar)

To share the atmosphere and revel in the occasion, here are four YouTubes which I captured during the evening with Annie and the Band in top gear! The fans too for that matter, as I jockeyed for positions to get the best views of the band.

Sunday a.m. 12th July, Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fans enjoyed an uplifting concert of hymns and spirituals in Ramsgate Harbour’s famous Seaman’s Church.

Thank you Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Committee and especially The Seaman’s Church for such an inspiring and calming interlude in the weekends activities.

And thank you Trefor Williams (bass), Ian Turner (Clarinet), Andy Maynard (Banjo) and Sid Bailey (Trombone) for such rich sounds in the perfect acoustical setting.

Of the two numbers I filmed for YouTube I preferred “In The Sweet By and By”. I was too entranced to film more. But I have also included The Sailor’s Church YouTube “respectfully dedicated to all who have lost their lives at sea”.

I am now busily preparing posts and YouTubes featuring the other festival bands and events in The Small Boat Owners Club and on the Harbour Concourse. So watch out for Annie Hawkins’ Jazzmen, Frog Island, Red Hot & Blue, The Big Easy with Trefor Williams and much more.

Bedford: Conscia Jazz at The Pavilion in The Park

Let me put you in touch with Tom Syson, a young man with a huge enthusiasm for jazz who is working wonders for the jazz scene and young jazzers in Bedford, Bedfordshire and beyond.

Tom recently launched Conscia Jazz, a new Bedford based jazz promotion and education company.

“The website talks about what the company is trying to do in both promotion and education and will have more updates in the coming weeks and months. This will include additional regular events as well as information about next year’s Conscia Jazz Festivals in Bedford.”

Emily Dankworth

Emily Dankworth

On June 25 Conscia Jazz launched their first ‘Jazz at the Park’ session, based in the popular Pavilion Cafe in Bedford Park. The evening was all about breaking down the barriers between the musicians and the audience and plans are to make these sessions regular events. The events will be two 45 minute sets long and will start at 8pm on the last Thursday of every month. A 15-30 minute Q&A session about the musicians and their music is included in the second set.

“A trio, duo or a solo act will perform each month and the aim is to promote a variety of different styles of jazz music.”

All tickets are to be sold online prior to the event at £10 (+ 10% booking fee) with a maximum of 30 available.

Regrettably Jazz&Jazz missed out on featuring Tom’s first event on 25th June but we are pleased to include the 30th July and 27th August sets below.
