Final Call for The 2015 Autumn Jazz Parade at Hemsby, Norfolk, 25th – 28th September

Lakefront-Loungers

Celebrating the Ken Colyer Heritage

I always take pleasure in featuring The Autumn Jazz Parade at Hemsby. It was the first festival I went to back in 2008 after a long absence from jazz (the picture above was one of my early photos for Jazz&Jazz). Plus, in 2009 my wife won the Trust’s Star Draw first prize – a brilliant Southern Sounds trip for two to New Orleans in 2010 for the French Quarter Festival. Whilst there I met and have stayed in touch with a number of New Orleans’ greatest musicians.

That got me right back into jazz and I launched Jazz&Jazz in an endeavour to give something back. Plus I launched my Jazz&Jazz YouTube Channel which features bands and musicians from around the world with over 150 subscribers and close on to 100,000 views. Below are YouTubes from last year’s Autumn Parade.

My special thanks also go to Festival Organiser Pete Lay who has been consistent in his support for Jazz&Jazz.

Emily Dankworth Duo at “Jazz at the Park” Presented by Conscia Jazz

Based in Bedford Park’s popular Pavilion Cafe, Conscia Jazz’s ’Jazz at the Park’ presented by Tom Syson, focuses on breaking down the barrier between performers and their audiences.

Emily Dankworth

Each event features mainly solo artists, duos and trios and includes a 15-30 minute discussion with the musicians themselves about their music, revolving around questions from the audience.

Emily Dankworth and James Leeming starred at an intriguing session on Thursday, 27th August, and I am pleased to present two Jazz&Jazz YouTubes which I took during the course of the evening (best viewed in HD). The magical informality of the event didn’t require stage lighting.

Tim Curtis on Sousaphone

It was good to chat with Tim Curtis again yesterday at Lemsford Jazz Club.

He was playing sousaphone with Bill Freeman’s New Orleans Happy Jazz Band. It’s some time since we last met. Here is my portrait and poem of him on his beloved sousaphone with Bob Thomas & The Tomcats in the good old days of jazz at The Long & The Short Arm hostelry
in Lemsford Village.

Sadly yet another pub which closed its doors to jazz after ten wonderful years of hosting great bands organised by Bob Thomas.

Announcing The Jazz Repertory Company’s Forthcoming Events

Orchestra

Natalie Hunt recently wrote to me:

Dear Peter

I work for the drummer and music director Richard Pite at PartyJazz/ The Jazz Repertory Company and he has pointed me towards your website Jazz and Jazz. We’re both incredibly impressed with the amount of work you’ve put into creating such a full and informative site and wonder if you would consider affording our forthcoming Cadogan Hall concerts any space?

We have Jazz In New York: The 1930s coming up on the 19th September and a huge Paul Whiteman two show extravaganza on Sunday 22nd November as part of The London Jazz Festival.

It would be wonderful if there was a way to have these shows mentioned on your site. I have included links below.

Kind regards, and many thanks,

Natalie

After such a wonderful message, Natalie, I simply had to “afford your concerts” space on Jazz&Jazz. And what better way to do so than to feature the web links you directed me to.

An outstanding musician and a remarkable man, who, over 50 years ago, went from England to New Orleans because of his love of jazz and his desire to learn how to play it for real. He actually stayed there and is now one of the Crescent City’s most respected musicians, where his own NEW ORLEANS SERENADERS are regular fixtures at all the New Orleans festivals, and at two of the city’s most celebrated jazz haunts, the Palm Court Cafe and Preservation Hall.

TOMMY SANCTON Clarinet

A native of New Orleans and a former student of the great George Lewis. Tommy has toured widely in Europe and the USA and has played at major international jazz festivals, including numerous appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Along with Clive he is often seen leading his own group at Preservation Hall.

Clive Wilson has assembled a great line up of veteran British jazz musicians to complete this touring version of the New Orleans Serenaders. They are:
