“Climax Rag” “On A Coconut Island” with Annie Hawkins’ Jazzmen at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle’s Festival

Fans out in force for Annie Hawkins’ jazzmen.

Annie Hawkins and her Jazzmen arrived in Ramsgate on Saturday evening, 11th July, at the height of the weekend’s heatwave. Seaside Shuffle Jazz Fans packed The Small Boat Owners Club to the gunnels.

So much so that in introducing Annie and the band, Mike Pointon paid Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fans the huge compliment of comparing them and the club with his favourite New Orleans jazz hot spots, adding “… in fact it’s hotter here than in New Orleans – and over at the bar there are even slices of refreshing water melon!”

Band

L to R: Mike Pointon (trombone), Annie (bass), Ken Sims (trumpet), Nick Ward (drums), John Law (clarinet), Richard Smith (guitar)

To share the atmosphere and revel in the occasion, here are four YouTubes which I captured during the evening with Annie and the Band in top gear! The fans too for that matter, as I jockeyed for positions to get the best views of the band.

Sunday a.m. 12th July, Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fans enjoyed an uplifting concert of hymns and spirituals in Ramsgate Harbour’s famous Seaman’s Church.

Thank you Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Committee and especially The Seaman’s Church for such an inspiring and calming interlude in the weekends activities.

And thank you Trefor Williams (bass), Ian Turner (Clarinet), Andy Maynard (Banjo) and Sid Bailey (Trombone) for such rich sounds in the perfect acoustical setting.

Of the two numbers I filmed for YouTube I preferred “In The Sweet By and By”. I was too entranced to film more. But I have also included The Sailor’s Church YouTube “respectfully dedicated to all who have lost their lives at sea”.

I am now busily preparing posts and YouTubes featuring the other festival bands and events in The Small Boat Owners Club and on the Harbour Concourse. So watch out for Annie Hawkins’ Jazzmen, Frog Island, Red Hot & Blue, The Big Easy with Trefor Williams and much more.

Bedford: Conscia Jazz at The Pavilion in The Park

Let me put you in touch with Tom Syson, a young man with a huge enthusiasm for jazz who is working wonders for the jazz scene and young jazzers in Bedford, Bedfordshire and beyond.

Tom recently launched Conscia Jazz, a new Bedford based jazz promotion and education company.

“The website talks about what the company is trying to do in both promotion and education and will have more updates in the coming weeks and months. This will include additional regular events as well as information about next year’s Conscia Jazz Festivals in Bedford.”

Emily Dankworth

Emily Dankworth

On June 25 Conscia Jazz launched their first ‘Jazz at the Park’ session, based in the popular Pavilion Cafe in Bedford Park. The evening was all about breaking down the barriers between the musicians and the audience and plans are to make these sessions regular events. The events will be two 45 minute sets long and will start at 8pm on the last Thursday of every month. A 15-30 minute Q&A session about the musicians and their music is included in the second set.

“A trio, duo or a solo act will perform each month and the aim is to promote a variety of different styles of jazz music.”

All tickets are to be sold online prior to the event at £10 (+ 10% booking fee) with a maximum of 30 available.

Regrettably Jazz&Jazz missed out on featuring Tom’s first event on 25th June but we are pleased to include the 30th July and 27th August sets below.

Mark Nightingale

Mark Nightingale

Two of the UK’s leading jazz soloists will be pairing up at the Carlton House Club on Tuesday, September 1st, for a special tribute to one of the most formative jazz line ups of its era – the legendary Mulligan/Brookmeyer Quartet.

Internationally-acclaimed UK jazz trombonist Mark Nightingale, a British Jazz Award winner in both the Rising Star and Trombone categories, is teaming up for this special gig with saxophonist Rob Fowler, who performs regularly around the world, including recent appearances with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra. British Jazz award-winning drummer Steve Brown, and Ronnie Scott’s All-Star bassist Arnie Somogyi make up the quartet.

Together the band will be performing the music of the great baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan who played a vital role in the development of modern jazz and contemporary music, and whose quartet with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer made its mark in jazz history. Don’t miss this great show!

The Covent Garden Marching Band Fine Tunes and Joyous Rent Collecting!

Town Cryer Alan Myatt Heads the Parade

Town Cryer Alan Myatt Heads the Parade

Marching Band Leader Tim Wacher on trombone at the fore.

Should you have been in Covent Garden, London, at 4.30pm on Thursday, 18th June, you would have experienced one the City’s unique and more eccentric events, The Annual Covent Garden Rent Collecting Ceremony: “…… a weird and wonderful occasion when the Chairman and Trustees march around the Piazza, accompanied by the Town Crier and a jazz band, to pay the “peppercorn rents” of five red apples and five posies of flowers for the buildings, known as The Protected Lands, on which the Trust owns a 150-year headlease.”
(Covent Garden Area Trust Website)

So spectacular was the occasion, and such is the rarity of Jazz Marching Bands in London Town that I simply had to film virtually the entire event … and, once the rents were safely gathered in, the Annual Concert in Covent Garden’s South Courtyard, described as Marching Band Leader, Tim Wacher, as “quite a big sound due to the acoustics of the Covent Garden Market roof and so a lot of fun”! Quite an understatement, Tim!

Covent Garden Rent Collecting Ceremony YouTubes

More information can be found in our earlier Marching Band Post so without further ado, let’s move on to the Jazz&Jazz YouTubes which reveal in brilliant colour this unique and historic event. There are nine in all and as you view them be sure to read the descriptions of the proceedings on each YouTube link.

Some are lengthy so I suggest you open a bottle of good wine, sit back and enjoy!

My special thanks go to Tim Wacher for allowing me the privilege of filming the event and to Laurence Cumming for his superb photographs, more of which I plan to feature in a separate post.

Buckland Abbey

Buckland Abbey

In The Great Barn at Buckland Abbey

Saturday 18th July 2015 from 6.00pm till late!

Summer is here again! Following last year’s highly successful inaugural event, Plymouth Jazz Club is again holding its ‘Jazz on a Summer’s Evening’ at Buckland Abbey.  This fine National Trust property near Yelverton was formerly a medieval abbey and later became home to Sir Francis Drake.  Built by Cistercian monks some 700 years ago in a lovely setting of meadow and woodland, the magnificent Great Barn will provide the venue for an evening of hot jazz music.  Two Jazz bands will play music for listening and dancing from 6.00pm to 11.00pm.  Also available, will be a Hog Roast, bar, hot & cold drinks, National Trust pasties, cakes etc. and a raffle.John-Maddocks

The early evening music will be provided by John Maddocks’ Jazzmen, a highly regarded traditional jazz band well known for its drive and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire. The band continues to be popular for all kinds of functions throughout the UK including most of the major jazz venues and festivals,  providing a great variety of toe-tapping music for listening and dancing.

Richard Leach's 7 Stars2Later on, returning by popular request, Richard Leach’s 7 Stars of Jazz features some of the most experienced jazz musicians across the country. With  an eclectic mix of Chicago, Swing and Dixieland plus a hint of Vaudeville, the band doesn’t just play jazz, it involves and entertains the audience, creating a wonderful atmosphere and getting people dancing!

Tickets are now on sale and numbers are strictly limited.
