Isle of Thanet Hosts Frog Island Jazz Band at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle

Frogs
Always popular at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle, Essex-based Frog Island Jazz Band got the festival off to resounding start with their Classic New Orleans Jazz of the twenties and early thirties – Joe King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodd’s et al.

Their visits to New Orleans brought them the ultimate accolade of having the title ‘International Honorary Citizens’ conferred upon them. If Shuffle Fans had their way The Frogs would also have ‘The Freedom of Ramsgate’ conferred on them.

John Whitehead, Trumpet; John Jeans, Trombone; Jim Hurd, Clarinet, Saxophone; Chris Marchant, Drums: Keith Durston, Piano: Brian Lawrence, Banjo; and the illusive Rob Fullalove, Sousaphone (Rob will understand!)

As ever their music tells the story:

The sun shone, the bands played, the brollies paraded and Ramsgate’s Beauty Queen and Princess smiled for the cameras. Jazz fans revelled in the events and onlooking holiday makers and local residents were enthralled by the fun and frolics!

I overheard one happy parent say to his youngster, “This is old time jazz! From New Orleans.
It’s great fun!”

Without doubt The Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival, now just in it’s fifth year, is putting New Orleans Traditional Jazz back on the map in the UK’s far south-east. So I want to pay tribute to the small but very active organising committee for their sterling work. They prefer to remain incognito so I’ll introduce them only by their first names, Ron, Chris, John and Paul.

Tony Richard (tpt), Dave Corsby (clt), Martin Rawbone (tmb), Nick Rawbone (dms), Neil Francis (bass), Dave Robinson (vibes)

“Richard’s Rascals” played on the Sunday, not quite such a bright day but “When You’re Smiling” made all the difference: Tony Richard (tpt), Dave Corsby (clt), Martin Rawbone (tmb), Nick Rawbone (dms), Neil Francis (bass), Dave Robinson (vibes).

Bedford: Conscia Jazz at The Pavilion in The Park

Let me put you in touch with Tom Syson, a young man with a huge enthusiasm for jazz who is working wonders for the jazz scene and young jazzers in Bedford, Bedfordshire and beyond.

Tom recently launched Conscia Jazz, a new Bedford based jazz promotion and education company.

“The website talks about what the company is trying to do in both promotion and education and will have more updates in the coming weeks and months. This will include additional regular events as well as information about next year’s Conscia Jazz Festivals in Bedford.”

Emily Dankworth

Emily Dankworth

On June 25 Conscia Jazz launched their first ‘Jazz at the Park’ session, based in the popular Pavilion Cafe in Bedford Park. The evening was all about breaking down the barriers between the musicians and the audience and plans are to make these sessions regular events. The events will be two 45 minute sets long and will start at 8pm on the last Thursday of every month. A 15-30 minute Q&A session about the musicians and their music is included in the second set.

“A trio, duo or a solo act will perform each month and the aim is to promote a variety of different styles of jazz music.”

All tickets are to be sold online prior to the event at £10 (+ 10% booking fee) with a maximum of 30 available.

Regrettably Jazz&Jazz missed out on featuring Tom’s first event on 25th June but we are pleased to include the 30th July and 27th August sets below.

Mark Nightingale

Mark Nightingale

Two of the UK’s leading jazz soloists will be pairing up at the Carlton House Club on Tuesday, September 1st, for a special tribute to one of the most formative jazz line ups of its era – the legendary Mulligan/Brookmeyer Quartet.

Internationally-acclaimed UK jazz trombonist Mark Nightingale, a British Jazz Award winner in both the Rising Star and Trombone categories, is teaming up for this special gig with saxophonist Rob Fowler, who performs regularly around the world, including recent appearances with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra. British Jazz award-winning drummer Steve Brown, and Ronnie Scott’s All-Star bassist Arnie Somogyi make up the quartet.

Together the band will be performing the music of the great baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan who played a vital role in the development of modern jazz and contemporary music, and whose quartet with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer made its mark in jazz history. Don’t miss this great show!

Plymouth Jazz Club Proudly Presents “Jazz On A Summer’s Evening”

Buckland Abbey

Buckland Abbey

In The Great Barn at Buckland Abbey

Saturday 18th July 2015 from 6.00pm till late!

Summer is here again! Following last year’s highly successful inaugural event, Plymouth Jazz Club is again holding its ‘Jazz on a Summer’s Evening’ at Buckland Abbey.  This fine National Trust property near Yelverton was formerly a medieval abbey and later became home to Sir Francis Drake.  Built by Cistercian monks some 700 years ago in a lovely setting of meadow and woodland, the magnificent Great Barn will provide the venue for an evening of hot jazz music.  Two Jazz bands will play music for listening and dancing from 6.00pm to 11.00pm.  Also available, will be a Hog Roast, bar, hot & cold drinks, National Trust pasties, cakes etc. and a raffle.John-Maddocks

The early evening music will be provided by John Maddocks’ Jazzmen, a highly regarded traditional jazz band well known for its drive and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire. The band continues to be popular for all kinds of functions throughout the UK including most of the major jazz venues and festivals,  providing a great variety of toe-tapping music for listening and dancing.

Richard Leach's 7 Stars2Later on, returning by popular request, Richard Leach’s 7 Stars of Jazz features some of the most experienced jazz musicians across the country. With  an eclectic mix of Chicago, Swing and Dixieland plus a hint of Vaudeville, the band doesn’t just play jazz, it involves and entertains the audience, creating a wonderful atmosphere and getting people dancing!

Tickets are now on sale and numbers are strictly limited.

Please contact: Mavis Humphreys (Chairman, Plymouth Jazz Club) on 01752 721179.
