Celebrating the Joy of Jazz
Note: Sadly, due to the atrocious weather, Tad has reluctantly had to cancel tomorrow’s Walnut Tree event featuring The Don Steele Band with Jan Bryce. Tad messaged me: “I will offer an October date to Jan and band Cheers, Tad.” The band would have had to travel from deepest Kent, one of the worst hit counties. Years ago when I lived in East Kent there were devastating winters. The sea even froze for almost a mile off shore in 1963.
Despite current inclement weather, Don and his band are assured of a very warm welcome at
The Walnut Tree, Blisworth, on Sunday, 4th March. Hailing from Kent, this will be a very special gig for trombonist Jan Bryce.
Richard Elmes posted a brief message on my Facebook Jazzers Group yesterday: “I’m devastated to say that Steamboat’s wonderful trumpet player and great friend Tony Richards, died today after a very short illness. We will miss him so much….condolences to his family.”
Tony played with Richard’s “Steamboat Jazz Band”. They featured regularly at the Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle annual Summer Festival and at the monthly jazz sessions in the Ramsgate Small Boat Owners’ Club where I was privileged to film them.
In remembrance of Tony here he is with Steamboat, “Basin Street Blues”

Hi Jazz & Jazz,
“As you probably heard, we recently announced updates to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). We made these changes to address a spike in abuse on YouTube by bad actors like spammers, impersonators, and re-uploaders. Our goal is to ensure a healthy ecosystem where original creators can grow and thrive.

Norman Gibson reported in Jazz North West, courtesy of Fred Burnett: “I have to report that there is no doubt that the Frog and Henry Trio UK Tour started with the best audience reception I’ve witnessed at Kendal Jazz Club in a long while. This was a really good marker for the success of their tour.
“The Old Rugged Cross” is favourite hymn written in 1912 by George Bennard, an American evangelist and composer. Recorded over the years by many famous artistes and performed here by the brilliant
Adrian Cox Quintet.

Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”

“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
