Rumours of Bill Freeman’s retirement were not so exaggerated after all!

The Band: Derek Scofield (clarinet, saxophone), Ted Barker (bass), Andy Moran (trumpet), Cyril Bass (drums), Jonny Leighton (banjo)

Indeed, Bill has laid up his trumpet but his legacy lives with the re-formed “Happy Jazz Band” which includes the nucleus of his former team of wonderful musicians. Booked by Smiffy for Lemsford Jazz Club a while ago, it is understandable that they were announced in the six-monthly programme under Bill’s name. And why not!

So now Jazz&Jazz is pleased to present The Happy Jazz Band’s first performance at Lemsford Jazz Club on Sunday, 3rd April, along with YouTubes taken on the day.

Forgive me Ben, for the perhaps not so subtle implication, but imagine featuring at a jazz festival which also stars the “intoxicating” Taimane Gardner.

No need to imagine it, Jazz Fans and festival goers. Ben Holder and Hawaian Taimane Gardner will be star acts at Fest Jazz in July this year. They may not share the same stage but we can promise dynamic performances to conjure up vivid memories.

Taimane is the international star of the ukulele. She has played for George Clooney, John Travolta and the Dalai Lama … now she is playing at Fest Jazz!  A rare European concert for this amazing young talent.

Taught classically from the age of six, Ben studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and is one of the most gifted and exciting young jazz violinists in the UK with an innate sense of swing rhythm inspired by greats such as Grappelli and Joe Venuti.

Sue is a graduate of The University of Texas Jazz Academy and stars with The Pasadena Roof Orchestra and Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra. She made a huge impact at a Walnut Tree Jazz and Dine Evening earlier last year.

Hank Jones so you have to be good to take this on as a project. As you listen to the Krupa Connection you will marvel at the neat arrangements which maintain such excitement between the soloing.
The three instruments are cleverly meshed together to keep the surprises coming and the fireworks fizzing and popping.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Reports of Bill Freeman’s retirement have been greatly exaggerated”, especially in view of his forthcoming gig at Lemsford Jazz Club.

The Editorial Column in the April edition of Just Jazz began “Trumpeter Bill Freeman, who announced his retirement at the end of 2015, was a worthy member of these foot soldiers and led his troops for over 20 years, with very few changes of personnel”. The quote is from one of his loyal foot soldiers, Jimmy Hurd, writing in the March edition of Just Jazz.

Well, Bill and doubtless Jimmy, along with his Happy Jazz Band will star at Lemsford this coming Sunday, 3rd April. So if you want to enjoy Happy Jazz best come along.
