Remembering Our Wonderful Friend, Bob Thomas, Jazz Trumpeter, 1931 – 2016

Jazz&Jazz Fine Art Print of Bob Thomas. The poem was aimed at keeping live jazz in the village pub. It reads: Jazz on the Island, Jazz in the Inn, Lemsford’s own Satchmo On trumpet in full swing. Fans take the long view, Dismissive of the short, Backing the Thomcats With total support.

It is with a such heavy hearts that Ginny and I have to tell the jazz world about the
passing of jazz trumpeter, Bob Thomas, aged 86.

Bob&Hazel

Happy Days! Bob and Hazel at a Lemsford Village Christmas Party in 2009.

I have a very special place in my heart for Bob and Hazel. We were neighbours in Lemsford village for years until Ginny and I moved away in 2013. I’m so glad that I visited them just four weeks ago. Bob wasn’t too well then but I spent an hour reminiscing with him and he brightened up considerably.

I supported Bob when he strove to keep jazz live and alive at The Long and Short Arm public house in Lemsford, now so many years ago, and have featured him and his band, Bob Thomas & The Thomcats, several times on Jazz&Jazz (links below).

I have so much to thank Bob for because he acted as my mentor when I got back into jazz over a decade ago. I spent long hours with him in his home on the banks of The River Lea in Lemsford and at “The Old Orchard”, our own home in the village, catching up on the jazz scene. He was a wealth of knowledge.

Plus he had a heart of gold and huge community spirit, playing with his beloved Thomcats at Lemsford Village fundraising events, at the Lemsford Village fete as well as mixing in with the villagers during the annual river bank clearances, even with waders in the River Lea.

When jazz came to an end at The Long & Short Arm, Bob and I went to The Peartree Jazz Club in Welwyn Garden City run by Brian Smith (Smiffy) and then, until Bob’s health deteriorated, we switched to Smiffy’s Lemsford Jazz Club.

Back in 2009 I painted Bob’s portrait on trumpet. It was all part of our campaign to keep live jazz in Lemsford. So it was a happy day for Bob when jazz did return to the village at Lemsford Jazz Club.

To cap it all, Ginny schemed with Bob to organise a very special treat for my 70th Birthday Party. Smiffy and my close jazz friend Roger Pout had lured me away to the Long & Short Arm for a celebratory drink. When we got back to “The Old Orchard” the house was filled with family, villagers and jazz friends – PLUS Bob and two of his musicians set up in the lounge alongside my father’s piano (a piano which Bob tuned, by the way) to provide top rate entertainment.

I had just been reading Topix Stars item “23 Legendary Stars Who Tragically Died in 2016” when Hazel telephoned me with the sad news. Add Bob’s name to that number.

“Without this kind of work, live jazz would be dead!” (Richard Exall)

Some months ago I was criticised for focusing on jazz clubs in just the Bedfordshire,  Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire Triangle. Followers of this site will know that this is far from the truth – the reach of Jazz&Jazz is world wide.

I admit that several clubs in Beds, Bucks and Northants do feature prominently. Not because I favour them above others, but because they are within striking distance for my regular journeys to follow and feature visiting bands and musicians from all over the UK and overseas – and in turn the clubs which book them.

I’ll take this a stage further. Some pundits are critical that I favour certain jazz promoters. OK – if I do it’s because they realise the benefits of featuring their gigs on Jazz&Jazz.

Where is this leading? In fact to a plug for one jazz promoter – inspired by Richard Exall’s recent appreciative thoughts about his massive contribution to jazz – who is representative of the sometimes sole destroying work of jazz promoters and jazz clubs in general.

Tad Newton & His JazzFriends
“I’ve been in Northamptonshire for over 10 years, and during that time I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with Tad Newton and his splendid band “The Jazz Friends” on quite a few occasions. Tad himself is an important figure in the East Midlands for his endless work promoting jazz venues and bands. He has given opportunities to musicians from across the country to come and perform here in Northamptonshire, and opportunities for people here to listen to some of the best jazz this country has to offer. Plus showcasing new talent.

“It is often a thankless task dealing with ungrateful musicians and seemingly unreliable audiences. Jazz promoters often subsidise the events in order to keep venues afloat, and have to strike a balance in programming that will never suit everybody. But without this kind of work, live jazz would be dead in this country.”

Tad Newton

Tad Newton

Richard went on to throw a light on the musicians themselves:

“Jazz musicians are a hardy bunch, but not very adept at generating work or liaising with the public and are easily disillusioned. We like to wallow in our misfortune of having an artistic talent and temperament which separates us from the every-day-man. It is both a gift and a curse. To be able to make an existence playing music and not being able to rid ourselves of it’s fatal allure and demanding nature. Instead we often rely on people like Tad Newton who are able to provide that much needed conduit to the public.

Tad-Photo-2

“Unfortunately, Tad is unique. If every town had a Tad, we musicians would all be rich! (well… richer, at least!) So we all have a lot to thank Mr Newton for. And not only that. He’s also a jolly nice fellow.

“Thank you Tad,  for all your hard work.”

Richard Exall

Thank you, Richard. That just about sums it up in a way which many other promoters would endorse but to round things off here is a YouTube of Richard Exalls’ Shooting Stars during their recent gig at Tad’s Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth.

 Tad’s Venues and Events

The Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth: Lunchtime Jazz every Sunday from October until April plus Summer Specials such as Jazz On A Summers Day and Wine & Dine Jazz Evenings.

Plus The JazzFriends at The Spice of Life this coming October:

Let The Good Times Roll at Fest Jazz 2016 with Dorine de Wit and Jamie Brownfield

Dorine2

The Dorine de Wit Band with Jamie Brownfield is heading for Fest Jazz,
Châteauneuf-du-Faou, this July.

Jamie Brownfield

Jamie Brownfield

Along with Jack Cotterill (drums), Ian Cox (electric bass}, Mike Lunn (keyboard) and David Vaughan (sax), Dorine (banjo and vocals) and Jamie (trumpet) promise spectacular jazz, drawing on the influences of trad, swing, rock ‘n’ roll, ska and even the unknown. They promise an infectious stage presence and feel good factor!

This is a band with plenty of energy and – as they would say in Cornwall – “proper drinking music!”Dorine1

Dorine3

I have followed Dorine for several years – at the 100 Club and UK festivals. She is a stunner in every way, not least her bubbly personality on banjo and vocals.

Great Jazz, “Dizzy” Bands, Full On Fun Assured for Fest Jazz, 2016

Dizzy-Birds-Current

Trevor Stent emailed me “Dizzy Birds are a superb group in my opinion!”

So as Trevor has booked them as one of the star turns for Fest Jazz, 2016, I took a look and came across this magical YouTube which surely evokes the mood and musical frivolity of this wonderful annual festival at Châteauneuf-du-Faou in Brittany, France.

Plus their very latest YouTube which Francois Perdriau has just supplied:

A truly international band, Dizzy Birds’ young musicians are based in Berlin but come from Denmark, Spain, France, Germany and the USA. Established as recently as 2013, the band interprets New Orleans Jazz and Ragtime with a flourish and energetic free style that attracts younger audiences right back to Jazz. They started out busking on the streets of Berlin but now play at clubs and prestigious jazz festivals throughout Europe.

Darktown Strutters Ball
“What I see are six young men playing the oldest jazz in the world. These are the Dizzy Birds, and they are part of the great revolution in jazz and swing music that is bringing back to the forefront a music that is far from dead.… They are playing Darktown Strutters Ball (Shelton Brooks, 1917) with dexterity and style within the tradition of New Orleans jazz music from the 1920s… they are having fun and they’ve tapped into the roots of what made jazz music hot 100 years ago.”
Patrick Faurot, Just Jazz, April, 2016.

Band Members
Eldar Tsalikov (RUS: alto saxophone and clarinet); Laurent Humeau (C.I.: guitar, soprano sax and clarinet); Paul Voit (GER: guitar, banjo); Francois Perdriau (FR: bass drum, cymbal, woodblock and bell); Flocko Motion (GER: double bass and tuba); Carlos St. Ana (ESP: piano and trombone)

This year Fest Jazz falls on the weekend of Friday, 29th till Sunday, 31st January.
