Fest Jazz 2022

Tuba Skinny special guests visiting from the USA

We are delighted to announce that Fest Jazz 2022 is on course for 28th/31st July!
We look forward to meeting all our UK festival goers again after the disappointment of 2020 and the difficulties of 2021. The festival in 2021 was a great success, but sadly those from the UK were unable to travel to France. That’s why we just can’t wait to welcome you back at
Fest Jazz 2022!

The Online Ticket Office is open so don’t leave it until the last minute to reserve your accommodation.  As one of the regions in France happily least affected by the Covid-19 virus, Châteauneuf-du-Faou is yet again a tourist hot spot!

So why delay? Be sure to explore the full programme and place your bookings post haste!
We truly look forward to seeing you back at Fest Jazz 2022.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
straight from

FEST JAZZ 2022 at Châteauneuf-du-Faou, Brittany.

This year, Fest Jazz, one of the most talked about jazz festivals on the European classic jazz scene, welcomes one of the most celebrated classic jazz groups in the world: Tuba Skinny.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hop over the Channel and see them.

The eight-piece group with its relaxed, informal approach to life and music will fit perfectly in the atmosphere of this legendary Breton festival, with its slogan “More Woodstock than Conservatoire!”

Nestling on the banks of the beautiful River Aulne in central Brittany, Fest Jazz is a four-day explosion of music and swing dance that attracts around 4 000 festival goers every year.  There are four covered venues with spectators freely strolling from one to the other, as well as music in the bars in the town where there is a rally of Classic Cars.  120+ musicians perform over 40 concerts during the weekend.

The atmosphere is relaxed and convivial with a great mixture of nationalities and generations. And there are swing dancers everywhere!  There is a “young and democratic feel” to Fest Jazz with young artists, young spectators and young organisers.  There is no “Artists’ Bar”, everyone mixes together.

It is likely that this year (as in 2021) that festival goers will have to show they have been fully vaccinated.  But Brittany has happily been spared the worst of Covid.  It is said that Châteauneuf-du-Faou is so far from anywhere, the Spanish ‘flu hasn’t arrived yet !

The early names on the programme 2022 include: Tuba Skinny (28th/29th July), the wonderful Gunhild Carling and her Family (30th/31st July), Tatiana Eva-Marie and Joe Santoni, Anastasia Ivanova (young Russian trombone star), Sabine Sassi, The Mama Shakers and many others.

Lots of people in the jazz world are talking about Fest Jazz as a “new kind of jazz festival”.  Why not come and see for yourself and join in the fun?

Write to [email protected]  for information and any questions you wish to ask.  Brittany Ferries (Plymouth – Roscoff) is the nearest ferry terminal (70 minutes easy drive away), Brest is the nearest airport.

It’s Trad Dad!

Barber, Bilk and Ball Stars play music by Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball plus Terry Lightfoot, Alex Welsh, Humphrey Lyttelton and more!
Before The Beatles Britain was Trad mad and our concert celebrates the music of the late ’50s and early ’60s when the sound of Dixieland was adapted in a uniquely British way to create a happy, upbeat swinging style that will be a perfect way of celebrating coming out of long Covid gloom. The seven-piece band led by trombonist Ian Bateman features a group of musicians who worked extensively with the big stars of the Trad era and continue to keep the music alive with their superb playing and sheer love of the music.

Facing up to Facebook

A close friend and long time follower of Jazz&Jazz recently lamented on the current paucity of features on the site. He presumed it might be due to the ongoing shut down of live jazz due to Cobid19.

Not so! A key to the problem is the rapacious omnipresence of Facebook. How so? Simply put, besides my personal Facebook Page I have also launched a Facebook Group entitled “Jazz&Jazzers / Celebrating the Joy of Jazz”. Popularity of the Group has shot up with 1,600 members and counting.

So as of now, my intention is to focus on and lure fans to this, my home site, Jazz&Jazz.com. In recent years I have filmed a series of YouTubes featuring a wide range of jazz bands and musicians. But I have become so entrapped by the easy accessibility of jazz on Facebook that I have sidestepped presenting them here on Jazz&Jazz.com. So much so that to date I have released only 56 of over 400 of my Jazz&Jazz YouTubes.

This has to change!

“SOUTH!” (Bennie Moten): The Tenement Jazz Band

During their Spring 2019 tour south of the border, Edinburgh’s
Tenement Jazz Band played at a Tad Newton Jazz Evening at Bedford Golf Club.
In addition to “South” their repertoire included a series of tuneful but
little know numbers.

Paddy Darley – Trombone
Charles Dearness – Trumpet
Tom Pickles – Saxophones
John Youngs – Guitar/Banjo
Doug Kemp – Double Bass

Facebook! Friend or Foe?

I launched my Jazz&Jazz Facebook Page some years ago. My intention? Primarily to feature and promote the contents of, and further the reach of jazz&jazz.com. It has helped. All the more so since adding my Facebook Jazzers Group. But recently Facebook has become top dog with Jazz&Jazz demoted to the wings.

One of my major Jazz&Jazz supporters recently emailed me: “I know everything has come to a near stop as far as jazz is concerned, but, on my frequent visits to your site, I have noticed it is rather spasmodic and quieter than I’ve been used to. I trust this is just down to the current situation we are all in.”

Norman, you may have hit the nail on the head. But this need not and should not be so.

Promotional opportunities lost!
Yes, along with the many members of my Facebook Jazzers Group, I have been featuring and promoting reams of jazz on Facebook. But this has been at the expense of current features here on Jazz&Jazz. Promotional opportunities lost!

A solution to this during the Covid19 Shut Down is to feature more, many more, of my Jazz&Jazz YouTubes here on Jazz&Jazz. I have let this lapse, so entangled have I become in Facebook and my Facebook Jazzers Group.

Facebook can be an encumbrance. It doesn’t get down to the nitty gritty possible here on jazz&jazz.com.

So my plea! Even though I use Social Media to highlight items, I urge fans and enthusiasts to comment in “Speak Your Mind” here on Jazz&Jazz rather than on, or maybe as well as, the Social Media links.

Obviously I will continue to use Social Media. But with increased discretion. I need to get back to spending serious time posting features here on Jazz&Jazz rather than allow Social Media to distract me or my followers.

Jazz&Jazz first and then my Facebook Jazzers Group!

Currently Covid19 prevents me from filming but fans can follow my Jazz&Jazz YouTubes at:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbyqlX9cd5D7h2FpXsdS7BQ/videos

Please, help the cause with positive feedback to this and other posts in Comments below. Thank you for your patience and continued support.
