Fenny Stompers, Live at the Peartree Christmas Bash

Dennis Vick’s Fenny Stompers did jazz fans proud at The Peartree Jazz Club Christmas gig on Monday, 19th December.  And so did club promoter Brian Smith (aka “Smiffy”) with a special spread of nibblies and mince pies – plus his very own virtuoso performance  on washboard along with the band!

And here is the proof:

So get along to The Peartree in Hollybush Lane, Welwyn Garden City, AL7 4JJ. Admission is only £6.00. For more information phone Smiffy on 01707 880569. As Dave Rance says “Smiffy’s doing a great job for British Jazz”.

Savoy Jazzmen Christmas Party

Welwyn Garden City’s Shamrock Club was packed on Sunday, 18th December, for Barry Palser’s Annual Christmas Party with his Savoy Jazzmen. Always a popular event, jazz fans enjoyed dancing, Heads ‘n’ Tails and Bridget’s delightful mince pies.

Geared up for the gig in Xmas Garb, Barry’s band included Allan Bradley on trumpet, Peter Gregory on banjo and guitar, Peter Baker on Double Bass, John Tyson on drums and special guest from The Chris Barber Big Band, David Horniblow on clarinet and saxophone. Tony Lodges (washboard) and Nobby Clark (vocals) starred in cameo performances.

Jazz Portrait: Pete Smith on Parade

Jazz Painting of Pete Smith on Sousaphone. Jazz fans at the annual Ken Colyer Autumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby, Norfolk, rejoice in the solidly reassuring presence of Pete in the Umbrella Parades and in the increasingly popular jam sessions.

But how many know that besides his beloved sousaphone, he has also worn a chain of office as Mayor of Needham Market in Suffolk! Watch out for Pete. Come New Years’, Summer and Autumn Festivals he is sure to be on parade. A certain winner for his commissioned acrylic jazz portrait.

Jazz Portrait: Dave Arnold on Drums

All too  often the drummer is hidden back of stage behind the brass and the reeds, yet he carries the entire band with his beat. So when the Fenny Stompers opened ranks to give Dave Arnold centre stage I seized the opportunity to capture just the image I needed for my jazz painting of him in one of his full power drum solos. This is reflected in my Dave Arnold Jazz Portrait poem.

Jazz portrait of Dave Arnold setting the session on fire as he takes centre stage for a dazzling drum solo with Dennis Vick’s Bletchley based Fenny Stompers at the Peartree Monday Jazz Club in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The Clash of the Cymbals
The Beat of the Drums
Clear the stage for the drummer,
Make way for his beat.
Cymbals ablaze,
His drum rolls amaze,
As he turns up the heat,
Lifting fans to a fervour
Of spontaneous praise.
