I’ve kept tabs on Jonny Boston ever since launching Jazz&Jazz, so I jumped at the opportunity to meet and film him for YouTubes at his Botany Bay Jazz Club gig in Hertfordshire, during his recent UK tour. He had gathered around him a great line up
of UK musicians for the tour:

Jonny’s vitality, personality and mission shone through the entire performance. His objectives in life, demonstrated in his music, are admirable.
Following the Bay gig, Jonny messaged me: “Nice to meet you Peter. We enjoyed ourselves. I look forward to seeing the YouTube clips when they’re ready.
“I’m hoping to bring “Jonny & the Jazzuits” over for some gigs in 2017, so if you have any ideas for church venues and jazz clubs, do let me know. God bless you!”

Washington Whirligig’s Winning Ways!

Washington Whirligig hit the jazz scene as recently as 2012 and their winning ways have quickly won then a reputation for versatility and professionalism.
As the following Jazz&Jazz YouTubes taken during their February gig at Blisworth’s Walnut Tree Jazz Club show, Washington Whirligig have quickly taken the jazz club scene by storm playing early New Orleans jazz through to mainstream, swing and blues in their own inimitable
and versatile style.

In my quest to post Jazz&Jazz features focusing on our fast emerging younger generation of Jazz Bands and musicians, I took in a gig at The Winning Post Jazz Club, Twickenham, recently to meet and film for Jazz&Jazz YouTubes Lizy Exell and The Old Hat Jazz Band. It was a huge pleasure to see Kay and Tony Leppard again (I still miss their Thursday Midday Gigs at The 100 Club) along with Mike Pointon, Peter Marr and Barry and Chris Price. Also my good friend, photographer Laurence Cumming, whose photos are featured in this post along with a selection of the YouTubes

Portrait of Band Leader Maurice Van Eyck

When Brian Turnock messaged me with the sad news that Maurice Van Eyck, formerly band leader of The New Orleans Z’Hulus, had passed away I promptly decided to ask my very good friend and fellow artist, Grace McKee, if she would paint a portrait of Maurice to commemorate him.
Then when I posted the portrait on Facebook and on my Facebook Jazzers Group the response was instantaneous and spontaneously positive. So I decided Grace’s portrait deserves pride of place as the latest art feature on Jazz&Jazz.

Conscia Jazz Update: The Bedford Jazz Festival 2016

Below is an update on the acts performing at Conscia Jazz Presents: The Bedford Jazz Festival 2016. All events displayed below are on sale at www.conscia.org, including
our two headline acts.
As well as selling tickets for each individual event, we also have ‘Main Stage Passes’. These allow you to go to all four events on the ‘Main Stage’ on that given day with just one ticket – just £29 for adults, and £21 for students!
We will be confirming the Community Stage acts very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for those.
We hope to be able to keep this festival going for many years to come so please tell your friends about it. We look forward to seeing you there on the weekend of the 19th of March!

Announcing a New Jazz Club for Cheltenham and Gloucester

Opening on Sunday evening, 20th March 2016, JB’s Jazz Club will welcome and entertain fans on the third Sunday of each month at the Civil Service Social Club, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham GL51 9SL. Music starts at 8.00pm. Admission £8.

Who’s involved?
The club is being organised by John Beckingham, a local pianist with a long career in jazz, pop and function bands. JB started the very successful JB Jazz and Blues Band nearly 20 years ago, and the band has become a firm favourite among jazz club and dance club audiences. Its popularity is based on a distinctive mix of swing standards, jive music and a high work rate that audiences love. In recent years they have become favourites with Saga Jazz Holiday customers in the UK and abroad. John is assisted by Phil Probert.

The Club’s Policy
The club plans to offer a good variety of jazz and swing styles, with its heart in the swing era, rather than in the N.O. Revivalist genre. We think there are already plenty of outlets for traditional jazz in the West Midlands and, although we will include ‘trad’ bands from time to time, our aim is to welcome as many musicians from other genres as we can. That said, we will be strongly guided by audience feedback as we go through the first few months. Bands already booked cover swing, jive, gypsy jazz, Bessie Smith-style blues, mainstream and traditional styles.
The Venue
We have been lucky to be offered a good room at the Civil Service Club in Cheltenham. The

premises are modern and smart, have excellent parking and are less than a mile from both the centre of Cheltenham and the M5. There’s a good bar, with moderate prices and there will be basket meals on offer.
Web presence
Our main medium is our Facebook page “JB’s Jazz Club”, which is already attracting some interest after only two days. We will develop links to both band and community sites and pages as we go along.
Finance
We’re putting our own money behind the venture, to get things rolling. Survival will depend on attracting sufficient numbers to engage attractive bands, and a key aim is to build a self-financing band fund to enable this. Wish us luck!

Alan Bateman’s Empathetic Portrait of Chris Barber and Pat Halcox

Art and painting are a wonderful therapies. I still paint the occasional portrait although due to damaged shoulders I can no longer paint with a steady hand at the easel. So these days it’s a privilege to feature on Jazz&Jazz Alan Bateman’s superb jazz portraits and here is his latest masterpiece – a wonderfully nostalgic portrait of the much missed Pat Halcox in duet with Chris Barber.
It hardly seems three years since Pat’s passing and I think it appropriate to feature along with Alan’s portrait the wonderful tribute my good friend and musician Bob Thomas wrote for Jazz&Jazz to commemorate him:
