The Dorine de Wit Band’s West Country Show, 3rd/5th March

Dorine and her band at Fest Jazz, Brittany, 2016

Born to Become a Star!

Growing up in Enkhuizen, a hot bed of traditional jazz in Holland, with a father who plays banjo in the Freetime Old Dixie Jass Band, singer songwriter Dorine is no stranger to the traditional jazz scene.

After moving to Cornwall in 2007 she became a founder member of the popular RnB, jazz and ska band “Roadkill”. She also toured the UK and Denmark with the Rich Bennett Band – a busy and popular band on the British jazz scene often winning “band of the year” in the clubs for pulling in the biggest crowds of the year. Despite only starting to play guitar (and later banjo) in 2009, Dorine is a naturally talented musician. With her relaxed but driving banjo playing and natural, warm singing style, she quickly became immensely popular and a star attraction wherever she played. So much so that last year she took the leap and formed her very own band.

NJA Blue Plaques Mark UK’s Jazz Heritage

Based in Loughton Library in Essex, The National Jazz Archive holds the UK’s finest collection of written, printed and visual material on jazz, blues and related music, from the 1920s to the present day. Founded in 1988 by trumpeter Digby Fairweather, the Archive’s vision is to ensure that the rich tangible cultural heritage of jazz is safeguarded for future generations of enthusiasts, professionals and researchers.

In 2011 the Archive received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to conserve and catalogue the collection with the focus on telling of the Story of British Jazz. As a result, many photographs, journals, documents and learning resources have been made available on the Archive’s website: www.nationaljazzarchive.co.uk .

Kevin Grenfell & Richard Leach “Girl Of My Dreams”: Another Intriguing Jazz&Jazz YouTube!

I’ve selected this YouTube as one of my favourites because of the great rendition of “Girl of My Dreams” and because it shows the “alternative” value of jazz gigs, demonstrated here by Kevin Grenfell’s humorous prelude. And yes, Kevin, you were being filmed for a YouTube.

Gene Austin’s “Girl Of My Dreams” (1928) performed here by
“Slide By Slide” for Jazz at The Bedford Golf Club on Thursday, 2nd May, 2014.
Kevin Grenfell (trumpet), Richard Leach (trombone), John Fellows (bass), Graham Smith (drums) and Simon Banks (piano).

Enjoy the repartee! And yes, “Acker and Kenny”, you are on YouTube!

Time For Another Favourite From My YouTube Collection: “I Remember Clifford”

Joan Chamorro (bass); Eva Fernández (sax, vocals); Andrea Motis (trumpet)

Just a few moments ago Ruediger Podlaha commented on my YouTube
I Remember Clifford’:

“It’s great to see these talented young ladies remembering one of the greatest trumpetists of jazz who died prematurely almost 60 years before this recording, thus continuing the tradition of immortal heroes of music like Benny Golson, Harold Land, Sonny Rollins or Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan. I’m sure Benny and Sonny will like it, and the others would have if they could have heard.”

So, Ruediger, I simply had to post ‘I Remember Clifford’ again as one of the favourites from my collection of almost 600 Jazz&Jazz YouTubes (400 Subscribers, 250,500 views).
