Following Amy’s recent announcement about their chosen future in jazz, Tad Newton was delighted to feature the Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club in Blisworth, Northants, Sunday lunchtime, 7th December.
Richard was especially pleased to welcome fans who left home at 5.30am to travel to the gig – including a group of Seaside Shuffle Jazz Club fans from Ramsgate in Kent – applauding them for going to such lengths in supporting live jazz.
So thank you Amy and Richard for a great session. And thank you Tad for live jazz in Northants and Bedfordshire at the Walnut Tree in Blisworth, The Castle in Wellingborough and at Bedford Golf Club, and for featuring great bands with young jazz musicians such as the RichardExall/Amy Roberts Quintet. With teamwork like this, live jazz has a great future.
Here is a YouTube filmed at The Walnut Tree session of just one of the numbers from the Quintet’s very latest CD “WHY NOT?”. As Amy explains, “Hushabye Mountain” is a ballad by Robert and Richard Sherman from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Amy is so mellow on flute and Richard stars as Dick Van Dyke.

Hi everybody,
I’m sure all will agree that we’ve had some great bands playing OJC this year…. the Frank Griffiths Quintet in January, Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings in February and last month the Richard Exall/Amy Roberts Quintet on the new stage, all playing to and entertaining capacity audiences. A big thank you to all who came and are helping to keep live performance jazz alive.
The next gig features the Richard Baker Quintet featuring Richard on trombone, Alan Wakeman on sax/clarinet, Ian Riley on piano, Dirk Griffin on bass and Alan Savage on drums.
8.00pm start. £10/£8 in advance from Carlton House Club, High St, Olney, 01234 711348
The Richard Baker Quintet
Originally a classically trained trombonist, Richard has worked in virtually every genre of music and appeared on numerous recordings during his 25 year career. As a jazz musician he has performed at venues all over the country as either a guest soloist or as a member of the many bands with which he regularly plays, including Richard Exall’s Shooting Stars, The Nick Ross Orchestra, Jucamaya and Interplay. The quintet was formed in 2013 is an unashamedly straight-ahead ensemble reminiscent of the quintets led by Frank Rosolino and Carl Fontana during the 1950s and 1960s. Their repertoire is an entertaining mix of material from great jazz composers such as Gerry Mulligan and Joe Henderson, combined with sophisticated arrangements of standards and Richard’s own compositions. Richard is joined on the frontline by renowned saxophonist Alan Wakeman and they are propelled along by the dependable rhythm section of Alan Savage (drums), Ian Riley (piano) and Dirk Griffin (bass).
Tuesday May 5th – “When Gospel Meets Jazz” featuring the Gary Wood Swing Band £10/£8
Tuesday June 2nd – “Celebrating Hoagy” with the Chris Ingham Quartet £10/£8
Tuesday July 7th – “Alan’s Summer Jazz Bash” featuring Roy Williams (trombone), Mike Wills (sax/clarinet), Tomas Pedersen (bass), Bobby Orr (drums) and yours truly on piano. £10/£8
Don’t forget to book if you would like to eat at any of these gigs: two main courses for £10.

Amy Roberts recently announced: “The last four years touring with The Big Chris Barber Band has been an incredible educational experience travelling throughout Europe and playing in some amazing venues.
“All good things must come to an end and I have decided to resign from the band so that I can focus on my own musical path. Richard Exall has also resigned.
“We are both looking forward to working together on some joint projects and an exciting new chapter in 2015. Thanks for all your support!”
First off this Sunday, 7th December, Amy and Richard will be “JAZZIN’ AROUND” at Tad Newton’s Walnut Tree Jazz Club, so join them there!

“Many millions have been grateful to know what Jesus and his family went through – what Ukrainian refugees now endure. God PERMITS the Herods and the Putins victories only to bring a greater good.
“No Anxiety” – that does not mean ‘Be Stoic’ – no feeling. It means enduring the feeling and the sense of panic, like anyone in danger but never surrendering. Finding ways to combat the panic. Joseph is the obvious example here. He was sitting pretty. All the anxieties about how to deal with a miraculous conception behind him, he had a home with Mary installed, her parents nearby, all set for the coming of the child.
“He never knew that a Dictator some 2000 miles away had sent orders about a “Poll Tax”! Joseph and Mary had to get down fast to Bethlehem or the soldiers would want to know why. All Joseph’s peace was shattered – Jesus born more or less in a ditch, like a tinker’s child. Then the order came not to go home but to become an overnight refugee in a desert and another country. To find a job and lodgings. Sounds familiar?
To say “Don’t Worry” to Joseph would have been stupid and callous.
“Since then many millions have been grateful to know what Jesus and his family had gone through – what Ukrainian refugees are now enduring. But “No Anxiety” means awareness that God PERMITS the Herods (and the Putins) victories only to bring about a greater good – even in this life – and most certainly in the ‘FOREVER LIFE’ to which the only condition is “Were you kind to anybody in need”?
“We face the possibility of war – and a likely financial collapse, where people in your neighbourhood could have to choose between food or heat. Covid hasn’t gone away.
“Was Christ anxious? As we approach Holy Week, ponder on the suffering Christ, who died on the Cross and rose in triumph.
Hang on to the fact of the Resurrection.”

On 23rd October John Petters announced his retirement from live gigs with effect from his performance at St John’s Arts Centre, Old Harlow, on Saturday 30th October.
John explained: “The jazz scene has been decimated by Covid and there is no sign things will get better any time soon.”
“I intend to focus my attention on my radio show, jazz history, talks on jazz to U3As and any other groups. I will also be writing a column for ‘Radcom’, the journal of the Radio Society of Great Britain and other writing projects. Much as I love playing gigs, enjoying the company of my fellow musicians and meeting jazz fans, I do not like all the aggravation which goes with it. I’m weary of driving for hours and lugging my drums in and out of venues and driving home again after playing a high energy gig. I intend to spend much more time enjoying my hobby of amateur radio and other activities.”
Unquestably we will miss your live gigs John, so what better way to reminisce and depart with a flourish than by recapturing here on Jazz&Jazz a selection of numbers performed not so long ago at your mesmerising evening hosted by Tad Newton at Bedford Golf Club.
Accompanying John:
Richard Exall (Clarinet, Sax), Pete Rudeforth (Trumpet), Keith Donald (Bass), plus Ace Harlem Stride Pianist, Dave Browning.
Just for the fun of it why not visit an original Fats Waller number,
“This Joint Is Jumpin'” – jazz as it was in the thirties. Hold your breath!: https://youtu.be/LKe6yH3ZwGo
Thanks for your jazz “Petter’s Style”, John!
We really would welcome the occasional come back!

Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”
Trevor Stent, Good Time Jazz
“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
Emile Martyn, The Fallen Heroes.
