Just a line to let everybody know our third Christmas Party at the Star in Old Wives Lees, Kent, takes place on Thursday 18th December. The host band this year is the Tuxedo Jazz Band and all attending musicians will be invited to perform during the evening. A free buffet will be available throughout the evening and we will have our usual huge Christmas Raffle.
This will be the last session for 2014. We recommence in the New Year on Thursday
8th January.

So if you are an East Kent jazz fan or are within striking distance of Old Wives Lees, be there. You will be warmly welcomed to join in the festivities by The Star’s regular jazz fans.

Following Amy’s recent announcement about their chosen future in jazz, Tad Newton was delighted to feature the Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club in Blisworth, Northants, Sunday lunchtime, 7th December.
Richard was especially pleased to welcome fans who left home at 5.30am to travel to the gig – including a group of Seaside Shuffle Jazz Club fans from Ramsgate in Kent – applauding them for going to such lengths in supporting live jazz.
So thank you Amy and Richard for a great session. And thank you Tad for live jazz in Northants and Bedfordshire at the Walnut Tree in Blisworth, The Castle in Wellingborough and at Bedford Golf Club, and for featuring great bands with young jazz musicians such as the RichardExall/Amy Roberts Quintet. With teamwork like this, live jazz has a great future.
Here is a YouTube filmed at The Walnut Tree session of just one of the numbers from the Quintet’s very latest CD “WHY NOT?”. As Amy explains, “Hushabye Mountain” is a ballad by Robert and Richard Sherman from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Amy is so mellow on flute and Richard stars as Dick Van Dyke.

On Thursday, 4th December, Sammy Rimington made a hugely acclaimed return to The Black Bottom Club in Northampton, along with Finlay Milne, Mike Owen, John Richardson, Brian Harding, Colin Richardson and Ivor Johnson. Since he last played the club it’s taken on a new dimension and incorporated “Aunty Ruth’s Private Members Bar”.
Besides festival appearances, for the past few years I’ve made it to Sammy’s gigs in Chilham, Kent, where I was also privileged to attend his book signing in March, 2013. But this year I couldn’t make it to Chilham and so was over the moon to hear about his “Aunty Ruth” gig within striking distance of my new address.
A Wonderful Evening
So thank you Sammy and Louise for the big welcome on the night. And thank you also to Tad Newton for coming along with me and navigating me through the Northampton maize to the hidden venue!
Creative Editing
Like so many jazz clubs, The Black Bottom Club isn’t the most conducive for filming but with some “creative” editing I hope I’ve captured the ethos of a wonderful evening in the following YouTubes.

Amy Roberts recently announced: “The last four years touring with The Big Chris Barber Band has been an incredible educational experience travelling throughout Europe and playing in some amazing venues.
“All good things must come to an end and I have decided to resign from the band so that I can focus on my own musical path. Richard Exall has also resigned.
“We are both looking forward to working together on some joint projects and an exciting new chapter in 2015. Thanks for all your support!”
First off this Sunday, 7th December, Amy and Richard will be “JAZZIN’ AROUND” at Tad Newton’s Walnut Tree Jazz Club, so join them there!

Want to know what’s on in jazz? Then this site is not for you – you need The Jazz Guide,
now in it’s 42nd year of promoting jazz events throughout the UK. Yet there are issues
which need confronting.
Fred Burnett recently mentioned them on Jazz North West:
“Producing the Jazz Guide is an expensive job and Terry and Sarah have seen for themselves at various jazz clubs that people have left copies lying about at the end of the night, so no surprise that free copies may not be so freely available in future. To ensure that you continue to receive a copy that keeps you abreast of What’s On in the whole of the UK, you need to subscribe.”
Subscribe NOW!
“Simply go to the Jazz Guide online and click on “Buy Now”, or there’s an option to do it the old way by post. It’s only £5 for 6 months, or £10 for 12 months, delivered to your door.”
Terry says, “We are also trying to widen the scope of the publication, by inviting other sections of the genre into the fold”. Jazz&Jazz shares Terry’s aims in this. It’s crucial for the future of jazz, especially amongst the younger generations.
Jazz Guide Newsletter
Terry has also introduced a Jazz Guide Newsletter which you can obtain via his web site on a regular basis by simply clicking on the “Contact Us” button and asking to be put on the newsletter mailing list.
Just recently the Newsletter featured a French Band well worth looking at: Hippocampus Jass Gang – “Who says OKOM is dying? No pensioners here folks!”
Norman Gibson commented: “We all love our traditional and classical New Orleans jazz, but this is a good example of what the 25/30 year old young people are craving for. These new young bands are playing some really good variations on the ‘old stuff’, and we promoters should relent and see if we can embrace it ! Trevor Stent suggested I look at Hippocampus Jass Gang and I have to say I like them. The dancers on this clip seem to be doing a form of retro swing line dance, but it can be seen that they are having a whale of a time with it ! Peter Butler at JazzandJazz is in agreement with the young band movement and is featuring many of the UK ones.”
But the Jazz Guide has been longest in the business of promoting jazz, so lets welcome and join forces with Terry’s aims, subscribe to the Guide and sign up for his Newsletter.
Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”
Trevor Stent, Good Time Jazz
“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
Emile Martyn, The Fallen Heroes.
