Full Focus on Jazz Drummer Colin Bowden

Where is the  jazz fan who doesn’t rate Colin Bowden as star drummer in the tradition of the New Orleans greats?

And yet drummers are invariably hidden from view at the back of the band behind the line up of brass and reeds.

I have had the immense privilege of photographing Colin live on several occasions with a view to including him in my pantheon of jazz portraits. And so, jazzers, please help me to select which of my following photographs of Colin you would prefer for his portrait in acrylics.

I have fun writing poems to accompany each fine art print of my jazz paintings and for Tony, this simple stanza sums up his virtuosity on trumpet.

Jazz Portrait: Pete Lay on Drums – A Giant of UK Jazz

Jazz portrait of Pete Lay on Drums

Since painting his jazz portrait on drums at the 2008 Ken Colyer Trust Autumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby, Norfolk, I’ve got to know Pete Lay well and count him as a very good friend. Pete is a man of few, yet incisive words, and a giant on the UK jazz scene, running his own band, The Gambit Jazzmen, organising a series of jazz festivals throughout the UK each year and producing Just Jazz, the monthly Traditional Jazz magazine.

Pete is very supportive of my jazz paintings and portraits and it’s very much due to him that in the past few years I’ve got more and more involved in the UK jazz scene. Hence, in 2010/11, I launched Jazz&Jazz.com, not just to promote my jazz art but especially to do what little I could to help publicise and promote Jazz. Since then I’ve even contributed articles to Just Jazz magazine.

Below is my fine art print and poem of my portrait of Pete on drums:

Drum roll, rhythmic beat
Pete Lay turns up the heat.

“The drummer is the foundation of the traditional jazz band. He is the man responsible for laying down the beat and keeping time.” Yet he takes a back seat hidden behind the trumpets, the trombones and the saxophones. In this portrait I’ve focused just on jazz drummer Pete Lay as his rhythmic beat turns up the heat.

I write a poem to accompany each fine art print of my jazz paintings and for Pete, this simple four line stanza sums up his prowess.

Jazz Portrait: Burt Butler on Banjo. Watch out for Burt at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle

Jazz Portrait of Burt Butler on Banjo

Burt Butler and His Jazz Pilgrims hail from Kent where they play a variety of venues. My jazz painting and portrait captures Burt during a session in Whitstable back in 2009. During trips to New Orleans, Burt plays with Steam Boat Willie and his New Orleans Jazz Band at Cafe Beignet on Bourbon Street where I was privileged to take jazz photographs of the band
for future jazz portraits.

Watch out for Burt’s Jazz Pilgrims on Ramsgate’s Harbour Parade each July during the annual Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Jazz Festival.

Burt on Banjo

Trad Jazz at its best
With Burtie Butler on banjo,
Each gig a joyous quest
For the New Orleans beat to flow,
As he and his Pilgrims reach for the grail.

I write a poem to accompany each fine art print of my jazz paintings and for Burt, what better than to describe his quest for traditional jazz!

“I have in my possession one large, wonderful print! I am very impressed! I must get it framed and on the wall in my study. I love the way you made my hair look –
you should be a hair stylist as well.”

Jazz Portrait: Laurie Palmer on Drums at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle

Jazz Painting: Commissioned Portrait of Laurie Palmer on Drums

The jazz drummer is usually obscured back stage behind the trumpets, trombones and saxophones, yet he sets the beat for the band. But playing with Burt Butler’s Jazz Pilgrims harbourside in Ramsgate, Kent, during the 2011 Seaside Shuffle Traditional Jazz Festival, Laurie Palmer starred front stage, his drum kit on full display. Watch out for Laurie with Burt’s band on Ramsgate Harbour Parade in July most years during the
Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Jazz Festival.

Jazz Portrait: Vocalion’s Sam Weller, Trombone, & Mark Alexander, Drums

Jazz painting of Mark Alexander on drums and Sam Weller on trombone

Medway based Vocalion Jazz Band led by Sam Weller is a great favourite with Kent’s traditional jazz fans. In this acrylic portrait Sam is playing alongside Vocalion drummer Mark Alexander at
The George in Shalmsford Street, Canterbury in May, 2011.

Fine Art print of Mark Alexander and Sam Weller.

Trombone and Drums

Good reason for fans to linger a while.

Jazz Portrait: Roger on Banjo and Pat on Drums, “A Strummin’ and a Drummin'”

Jazz painting of Roger Nicholls on banjo and Pat Elms on drums

One of my favourite Jazz portraits, especially as so sadly, Pat Elms is no longer with us having passed away early in 2015. But here he is on drums alongside Roger Nicholls on banjo with Bob Thomas and The Thomcats playing at “Jazz on the Island” in Lemsford, Hertfordshire, back in 2011.

Jazz Portrait: Paul Bonner (trumpet), Tony Rico (sax) and Ben Martyn (bass & vocals)

Left to right: Tony Rico, Paul Bonner and Ben Martyn

Jazz painting of Paul Bonner, Tony Rico and Ben Martyn playing with The Fallen Heroes at a “Jazz In the Barn” concert back in 2009 in Throwley, Faversham, Kent. Sadly Paul Bonner died in January, 2011, after an illness spanning several months. I got to know Paul at The 100 Club and Fallen Heroes gigs. He was very personable and always had the time for a chat.
Recently I met up with Tony Rico again and we spoke about Paul.
So I decided to dedicate this jazz portrait to his memory.

I write a poem to accompany each fine art print of my jazz paintings and although this verse was written before Paul Bonner’s untimely death, after some reflection I decided the words highly appropriate.

Jazz Artist Fred Bromfield Presents “Jamming” and “Riverboat Shuffle”

River Boat Shuffle

Fred describes his latest work, “River Boat Shuffle, memory of an bygone golden afternoon”, as very childlike and primitive. Pure expressionism.

Similarly he describes “Jamming” (below) as free flowing, naturalistic and evocative of improvisation at its best.

"Jamming"
