Lemsford Jazz Club Revisits the Music of Johnny Dodds and the 1920s with The Frog Island Jazz Band

Lemsford Jazz Club fans were swept along on a tide of nostalgia back to the 1920s and 30s by The Frog Island Jazz Band on Sunday, 1st May.

John Whitehead, Trumpet; John Jeans, Trombone; Jim Hurd, Clarinet; Chris Marchant, Drums; Keith Durston, Piano; Brian Lawrence, Banjo; Rob Fullalove, Tuba.

The band and fans were saddened when Brian Smith (Smiffy) announced the passing of Bob Thomas, who, with his Thomcats, did so much for jazz, especially in Lemsford, over many, many years. His close friend, Clarinetist Jim Hurd was stunned by the news:
“To me Bob always seemed indestructible!”

The Frog Islanders were one of Bob’s favourite bands. Just perhaps he didn’t miss out on the session! After all he was always a free spirit!

“Broken Hearted Blues” – the Real Version by Tuba Skinny

Tuba Skinny’s very own version of “Broken Hearted Blues” written and sung by Erika Lewis and filmed in the Grand Marquee at Fest Jazz, 2014.

I call it one of my “Take Two” YouTubes due to the angles I had to film from to avoid/crop out the melee of dancers (much as they added to the atmosphere) and capture the band at their best. Sadly whilst Erika is centre stage only glimpses are caught of Shaye left of stage. But the sound is OK and the atmosphere captures the magic of live jazz. Who needs recording studios!

Bravo Tuba Skinny! Perhaps we might see you back at Fest Jazz in the not too distant – no, the near future!

Bedford Jazz Festival 2016 Recaptured

The Quarry Theatre, The Corn Exchange, The Ent Shed, The Bedford Arms and the Pavilion Cafe were all alive with the sound of music during the 2016 Bedford Jazz Festival over the weekend 19th/20th March.

Frank Griffith’s article in The London Jazz News sums up a brilliant weekend and applauds Tom Syson and his Organising Committee for a very successful Festival, leaving it to this website to feature a selection of Jazz&Jazz YouTubes recapturing the musical memories at The Quarry Theatre and at a mainstay of jazz in Bedford, The Bedford Arms.

Final Call for The Bedford Jazz Festival 19th/20th March

‘Conscia Jazz Presents: The Bedford Jazz Festival 2016’

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well.

Well March has gone fast hasn’t it! It only feels like yesterday that we first announced some of the acts for the ‘Conscia Jazz Presents: The Bedford Jazz Festival 2016’. It is very exciting that we are only 2 days away from the start of the festival, and I can’t wait to hear all of the acts perform.

Below is the final line up for the ‘Conscia Jazz Presents: The Bedford Jazz Festival 2016’, which includes the confirmation of ‘The London Vocal Project’ as the support act for our Sunday night event, as well as all of the ‘Community Stage’ artists. All events that are displayed below are on sale at www.conscia.org. Please remember that you do not need tickets for the ‘Community Stage’ as it is free entry.

For those of you who don’t know, as well as selling tickets for each individual event, we also have ‘Main Stage Passes’. These allow you to go to all four events on the ‘Main Stage’ on that given day with just one ticket; at just £29 for adults, and £21 for students!

Bedford Festival 19:20 March

We hope to see you all this weekend to celebrate this great genre of music in our town! If you have a moment, please tell your friends about what is going on to help spread the word about jazz in Bedford.

Many thanks

“Gentlemen” Plus One Gentle Lady: aka “The Old Hat Jazz Band”

The Old Hat Jazz Band

The Old Hat Jazz Band

In my pursuit of the emerging generation of young jazz musicians and bands I seize every opportunity to seek them out and film them for my Jazz&Jazz YouTubes.

I grow weary of fatalistic echoes about the death of jazz. That might have been on the cards a while back but nowadays Jazz is bouncing back with panache. I take every opportunity I can to film and feature young bands, musicians and fans on Jazz&Jazz – whether in clubs or at festivals or in their own venues playing for their own enthusiastic new generation of jazz fans.

I applaud established promoters who welcome these young stars to play on the club and festival circuits. I applaud all the more older fans and musicians who cross the thresholds of vibrant new venues and mingle with our new generation of jazz fans.

Lazy Exell

Old Hat at The Winning Post
Perhaps Lizy Exell and her band of troubadours were quite canny in calling themselves “The Old Hat Jazz Band”. That name and their musical prowess quickly launched them on the jazz scene in and around London and increasingly further afield to great acclaim from fans of all ages.

So here they are with “Gentleman” at The Winning Post Jazz Club, Twickenham, where young jazz musicians are every bit as welcome as any long established band.

Newly Released YouTubes of The Sant Andreu Jazz Band Herald Countdown to Fest Jazz 2016

Sant Andreu Stars Jamming with Good Time Jazz

Joan Chamorro’s Sant Andreu Young Stars Jamming with Trevor Stent’s Good Time Jazz Band

The Jazz&Jazz Countdown to Fest Jazz 2016 begins here with a
Sant Andreu Jazz Band teaser.

Fest Jazz, the young at heart and inspirational festival in Brittany, has announced the first name for the 2016 edition: Joan Chamorro and the Sant Andreu Jazz Band!!!  “It’s going to be wonderful to see those 30 talented young musicians again. They rarely play as a band outside Barcelona and we are very proud that they are so keen to come to Fest Jazz this year,” says Festival Director Trevor Stent. “They will be playing in small groups during the weekend and then as a Big Band on the Sunday evening. It will be fantastic!”.

Jazz&Jazz filmed at Fest Jazz 2014 when Sant Andreu’s talented young stars first stole the show! You will find a selection of the Jazz&Jazz YouTubes taken back then, scattered throughout this website. Now I’m releasing a so far unseen but joyful teaser of Joan Chamorro’s wonderful young stars – an intriguing clip from a totally unrehearsed and impromptu Jam Session with Trevor Stent and his “Good Time Jazz Band” musicians. I filmed it against the somewhat noisy backdrop of the marquee being set up for the next session. But it’s the atmosphere that counts and the sheer joy displayed by Joan’s young stars – not necessarily in this case the sound quality.

Some teaser! But before releasing it I ensured that I had Joan’s approval. He said he would take a look at the YouTube and get back to me. When he did he messaged: “The sound is bad but it’s a nice time so I have no problem. Thank you for everything you do.” And then he sent me a St Andreu YouTube of his young star Rita Payes singing  “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me”. Magical!

Here are the two YouTubes:

I can’t wait to get back to Châteauneuf-du-Faou this July! Come back to Jazz&Jazz soon for more about Fest Jazz 2016 and how to book along with travel information.

Footnote: I have been challenged if not criticised for placing so much emphasis on Fest Jazz. Why do I? The festival is making headlines in magazines such as Just Jazz, March 2016, and Sean Moyses’ article in the October 2015 issue. Sean starred at Fest Jazz last year. My reason for wanting to get back there this year is the proven popularity of the youthful bands and musicians Trevor Stent features – from Europe, the USA and the UK. Proven? Yes, by the thousands of viewings my Fest Jazz YouTubes get compared with the meagre viewings of my other Jazz&Jazz YouTubes – even of those featuring young bands. There has to be a lesson in this and if we learn it, who is to say many more such bands can’t zoom in popularity. Especially now that Jazz is beginning to make a come back. This is my very first plug on this issue and I shall continue with the theme.
