Hippocampus Jass Gang at The Bay Jazz Club

Band-Photo-1
A fan commented on one of my Hippocampus Jass Gang YouTubes:
“This band will become famous!”

I am indebted to The Bay Jazz Club, Enfield, and to Hippocampus for permitting me to film them on Tuesday, 21st June, during their UK tour. The Bay is an excellent venue for filming compared, for instance, with festivals where it isn’t always easy to achieve best results.

Hailing from France, Hippocampus surpassed all my expectations. Much of their repertoire draws its inspiration from the hot jazz of the early New Orleans era, yet with an intensity and inimitable charm all of their own. With this, plus their interpretations of French and European Jazz and Swing, they are indeed going places.

 “The Gang” are, en française:

Joseph Vu Van: Banjo, chant et arrangements
Pierre Bayse: Clarinette, clarinette basse, chant
Heykel Bouden: Violon, chant
Alexis Chauvelier: Guitare, chant
Gildas Le Garrec: Contrebasse, chant
Simon Laurent: Batterie

The Magnificent Seven Jazz Band

Mag7Band
Formed in 2013 by a nucleus of musicians from the Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball bands, the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN JAZZ BAND comprises some of the most sought-after and successful musicians on the jazz scene today. Performing a wide range of jazz styles through well crafted arrangements, this band of versatile musicians successfully blends music from every jazz genre into an exciting and approachable package.

Calling on their experience of performing with Europe’s most influential jazz bands of the last sixty years, the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN combines a wealth of experience with youthful exuberance. Paying homage to the great jazz masters of the early jazz period as well as keeping alive the sounds of the swing era, the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN’s repertoire also celebrates the jazz revival of the 1950’s, tipping their hat to the great bands of Barber, Ball and Bilk. This band takes no prisoners!

The MAGNIFICENT SEVEN play a varied repertoire, with compositions and arrangements by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, Errol Garner, Fats Waller, Chucho Valdez, Paquito D’Rivera and many more.

Line-up:

Despite the Rain, Jazz Adds Panache and Flair to Covent Garden’s Flamboyant Rent Collecting Ceremony!

Band-Cryer

Should you have been in Covent Garden, London, by 4.30pm on Thursday, 23rd June, you would have experienced one of the City’s unique and more eccentric events, The 19th Annual Covent Garden Rent Collecting Ceremony: “…… a weird and wonderful occasion when the Chairman and Trustees march around the Piazza, accompanied by the Town Crier and a jazz band, to pay the “peppercorn rents” of five red apples and five posies of flowers for the buildings, known as The Protected Lands, on which the Trust owns a 150-year headlease.”

But this year marching around the Piazza was abandoned due to torrential rain. Nothing daunted, proceedings continued under the shelter of the covered market avenues which meant mingling with the mass of Covent Garden visitors. What better way to describe the event than with a selection of photographs and YouTubes filmed on the day.

The following two YouTubes depict the melée of the Jazz Marching Band, fans and tourists, with the Trust’s photographer, Pete Jones, ducking and diving to capture best shots of the musicians. I too was weaving in and out of the crowd for best position for filming. All great fun!

Next the Town Cryer gathered together the band, dignitaries, fans and onlookers and led the way to the Market’s North Hall for the annual ceremonial rent collections.

Bouquet-Red-Apple

Then came interludes of dignified humour, the payment in full of the Apples and Posies Rents, interspersed by a stirring rendition of Dr Jazz by the Marching Band ………

……… and finally the grand finalé concert in Covent Garden’s Southern Courtyard.

Reeds: Julian Mark Strangle (clarinet), Karen Sharp (tenor) Eric Gilchrist (alto)
Trombones: Chris Gower, Phil Brown and Tim Wacher.
Banjo: Alan Bradley and Max Britain
Sousaphone: John Beecham.
Drums: Dom Coles and Ben Martyn

Just for more fun:

Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival: Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd July

burtonagnesjazzfestivalPic1

‘Possibly the most enjoyable jazz concert I’ve ever attended’ The Independent

The 2016 Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival is taking place on the weekend of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd July.

Surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds, the Festival is set in the award winning grounds and Great Hall of this Elizabethan stately home. Could this be the most breathtaking place to spend a weekend, soaking up the UK’s hottest jazz and blues acts?

Drummer

Festival favourites Octopus kick off the festival in style on Friday evening with their classic big band swing, before Bugalu Foundation brings a fusion of jazz, funk and soul with the beats of ’El Barrio’ and the Hispanic traditions of Latin America. This nine piece powerhouse has more than a hint of Palmieri’s trombone rich ‘La Perfecta’, combined with the guitar fuelled Afro-Latin style of Joe Battaan.

Manjula kicks off Saturday’s line up with their haunting ambience of Indian vocal training and the rhythmic attack of jazz improvisation. From here, we move to pianist Dudley Nesbitt, who is an exceptional and unflagging advocate for the art and culture of the steel pan, and presents a blend of contemporary Trinidadian calypso, Brazilian samba and bossa nova, soul tunes, Caribbean jazz, rumba and cha cha. Blind Monk Trio rounds off the afternoon session, putting a fresh spin on the sax/bass/drums trio format. Drawing influences from the history of the genre (including Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and FLY), blending their music with alternative rock and eastern folk, Blind Monk Trio present quirky original compositions along with some surprising arrangements of classic standards.

One of the great British jazz voices of all time, Elaine Delmar brings her acclaimed interpretations of two of the greatest songbooks of all time, Gershwin and Porter, to the festival on Saturday evening. Accompanied by a stellar group of musicians, Elaine performs classic arrangements of George Gershwin and Cole Porter, as well as taking a fresh new look at some of the twentieth century’s most iconic music. Completing Saturday’s line up, ’60s legend P.P. Arnold will have festivalgoers off their seats and dancing with a collection of classic tunes including ‘The first cut is the deepest’, ‘Angel of the morning’ and ‘(If you think you’re) groovy’.

Improvising violinist Matt Holborn will start off the festival on Sunday, performing pieces with a gypsy jazz and swing vibe. Also rooted in the improvisational traditions of jazz, Lindsay Hannon and her band will take us on a journey from raucous barrel house blues to thoughtful, spacious ballads across a variety of grooves, creating an electric atmosphere. Next, Graeme Wilson will play an infusion of driving jazz and Latin rhythms, ambient swing with enthusiasm for folk and rock ballads, and free jazz. Simon Cunliffe-lister will join Ben Beattie’s After Midnight Band to round off the festival, playing a combination of the songs that we love and Ben’s own original compositions. As previously, bands overflow from the outdoor main stage into the Great Hall and the courtyard, and the party will continue at the vibrant late night sessions in the Wold Top bar tent.

white-rose-awardsDelicious, freshly prepared food will be served on the Food Lawn by Field and Forage and in the Tea Tent, and we’ll have wonderful, award winning Wold Top beer on tap, brewed just a few miles away. There will be camping in the beautiful surroundings of our adjacent Park Field, with hot showers laid on as usual.

“This is a very English festival, with a wonderful laid-back atmosphere…superbly organised and efficiently run, which brought together such a wide range of musical styles across a successful weekend…Yes, this is a wonderful English festival.” Fatea Magazine

“Who could have imagined such an idyllic and sublime location for a Jazz and Blues Festival….thankfully somebody did…This unique venue and event is a must attend festival….make sure you get your tickets…I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”

“Hot off the Press” Old Hat Jazz Band Present “The Sparrow”

Lizy-Drums

Lizy Exell emailed me:
“Hi Peter
“Just writing to let you know that Old Hat have recorded our first album called The Sparrow. Each member of the band has written a tune or more on the album, comprising 13 original tracks inspired by the sounds and energy of the 20s and 30s jazz we have been playing together for four years.
The Old Hat Jazz Band

The Old Hat Jazz Band

The Sparrow is our interpretation of early jazz. Tuned into our four year journey with the band and our immersion into the roots and sounds of jazz, each Old Hat musician has written one or more numbers on the album. The album comes in a beautiful digi-pack with cover art by Dimi Shoe. It includes unlimited streaming of The Sparrow via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.”
“You can hear The Sparrow here: oldhatjazzband.bandcamp.com.
“We hope you like what you hear and it would be fantastic if you could share it on Jazz&Jazz.”

Thursday 23rd June: A Spectacle To Behold – Covent Garden’s “Weird and Wonderful” Rent Collecting Ceremony Majestically Supported By The Covent Garden Marching Band

covent-garden

Town-Cryer-Heads-Parade

Why not make a day of it in Covent Garden, on Thursday, 23 June, to experience this unique annual event. Be there in good time – the ceremony starts at 4.30pm.

Tim-heads-March

Flamboyant Rent Collecting With Panache!
“The annual Rent Ceremony is a weird and wonderful occasion when the Chairman and Trustees march around the Piazza, accompanied by the Town Crier and a jazz band, to pay the “peppercorn rents” of five red apples and five posies of flowers for the buildings, known as The Protected Lands, on which the Trust owns a 150-year headlease.” (Covent Garden Area Trust Website)

This, the 19th Annual Ceremony, promises all the flamboyance and panache of preceding years and it has to be witnessed to be believed! The band includes especially selected jazz musicians with The Covent Garden Town Cryer at the head of the parade.

This year the band will include:

Trumpets/Cornets: Digby Fairweather, John Keen, Chris Hodgkins and John Wacher.
Reeds: Julian Mark Strangle (clarinet), Karen Sharp (tenor) Eric Gilchrist (alto)
Trombones: Chris Gower, Phil Brown and Tim Wacher.
Banjo: Alan Bradley.
Sousaphone: John Beecham.
Drums: Don Cook and Ben Martyn.

“True New Orleans Style”
Directed by Tim Wacher and headed by Town Cryer Alan Myatt, the marching band will set off, in true New Orleans style, at 4.30pm from 13, New Row, Covent Garden WC2 (the offices of the Covent Garden Area Trust – opposite Waterstones), keeping up a steady pace down King Street and around the Piazza with appointed stops on route for the collection of the rents. The parade will pause for essential refreshments outside the Punch and Judy Pub before culminating with dignitaries’ speeches in the Market’s North Hall.

Courtyard-Band-4

“Quite a Big Sound”
Then comes the grand finale in the South Courtyard of the Market (outside the Crusting Pipe) where, after a short interval, the band (finally static!) plays a second set lasting an hour and finishing around 6.30pm. Tim Wacher regularly assures me “It’s a lot of fun and quite a big sound due to the rather special South Courtyard acoustics!” I can vouch for that!

Jazz&Jazz covers the march each year, featuring Jazz&Jazz YouTubes and brilliant photos taken by my colleague, Laurence Cumming. So we hope to see you there!
