Iris Steels the Peartree Show with Bill Freeman’s New Orleans Happy Jazz Band

Thrilling on vocals, Iris wowed Bill Freeman’s Peartree Jazz Club fans on Monday, 16th April, even surpassing the magnetism of Bill’s dry humour. Classic New Orleans traditional jazz filled the bill with Bill on trumpet, John on banjo, Ken on trombone, Jim on sax and clarinet, Ted on Sousaphone and, flamboyant as ever, Cyril on drums.

Club promoter Brian Smith (Smiffy) was pleased to welcome four newcomers to the club courtesy of the Peartree Jazz Guide ad. Hopefully this is just the beginning, with membership of the Welwyn Garden City Peartree Monday Jazz Club growing from month to month. Longstanding members welcomed the newcomers and didn’t even bat their eyelids when they walked off with three of the raffle prizes!

So let’s spread the word about live traditional jazz in Welwyn Garden City. And let’s aim to do more to win over younger fans.

More Jazz Paintings by Fred Bromfield

Like me, Fred Bromfield has a very special love for real McCoy New Orleans Jazz. His style, which he describes as “a visceral and raw expressionism capturing the spontaneity and freedom of traditional jazz” is very different from mine but I love his jazz art.

So here are two more of Fred’s jazz paintings.

“Pete Curtis’s New Orleans Echoes”

Although based in East Sussex, England, Fred’s painting of Pete Curtis’s New Orleans Echoes is for me faintly reminiscent of  jazz paintings from a bygone era in New Orleans’ famed Preservation Hall.

Alex Gardiner on Trombone

Fred’s rendition of his good friend, Alex Gardiner on “tailgate trombone playing earthy gutbucket” jazz with Trefor William’s Select Six at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle ‘s March gig. There’s a certain fiery emotion in this work! Fred should know, he once played trombone himself.

Eyes on the Master: Jazz Portrait of Amy Roberts and Sammy Rimington

Amy Roberts, then “the new kid on the block”, accompanying maestro Sammy Rimington at the Ken Colyer Trust 2008 Autumn Jazz Parade. Recognising Amy’s huge talent, Sammy invited her to play duet with him on the final evening of the Parade. The next morning I overheard him stressing the need to to persuade Amy to stay with jazz: “Amy’s got a natural talent and feel for the music. She’s got rhythm. She’s the future of jazz.”

Since then Amy has gone from strength to strength playing clarinet, sax and flute, and is featured in several other posts on Jazz&Jazz.

Featuring Fred Bromfield, Jazz Artist

Fred Bromfield describes his jazz art as “visceral and raw expressionism capturing the spontaneity and freedom of traditional jazz”.

Jazz & Jazz welcomes the opportunity to feature two of his most recent works: “Oh Play That Thing” featuring Pete Curtis on clarinet, Peter Leonard on trumpet and Alex Gardner on trombone playing with Trefor Williams’ Select Six at a recent Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle gig  and “Wailing the Blues”, a rendition in oil and sand on board of Pete Curtis on saxophone.

Bill Freeman Back at the Peartree by Popular Demand

Bill Freeman’s New Orleans Happy Jazz Band will star again at The Peartree Monday Night Jazz Club, Welwyn Garden City, this coming Monday, 16th April. Ramsgate Resonates to Trefor William’s Select Six at Seaside Shuffle’s March Jazz Gig

Trefor William's Select Six

Top rate jazz reverberated throughout Court Stairs Manor & Country Club on Friday, 30th March, when Trefor William’s Select Six came to town for Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle’s newly launched programme of monthly gigs.

Trefor Williams, bass and vocals

Fans showed huge appreciation for Trefor’s star musicians and for the incredible acoustics in the old Manor House, set on the cliff tops overlooking Pegwell Bay. Not many venues can match this glorious setting for traditional jazz at it’s very best.

So spread the word about Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle at Court Stairs. It’s got what it takes for superlative jazz and a host of appreciative fans.

Full details about the Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival in July and forthcoming monthly gigs can be found under Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle 2012 Events: Latest News & Updates on the July Festival and Monthly Gigs.

PS Given his Select Six’s powerful rendition of their selection of New Orleans classics I’ll pass on commenting about Trefor’s cryptic one-liners!

Appreciative Seaside Shuffle Fans.

Double Take: Jazz Portrait of Adrian Cox on Sax and Clarinet

Double Take: Acrylic Jazz Portrait of Adrian Cox

Jazz painting capturing two distinctive stage profiles of a young Adrian Cox enthralling jazz fans in star performances – on saxophone, hauntingly silhouetted by the stage lighting – and on clarinet, in contrasting full spotlight – at the 2009 Ken Colyer Trust Autumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby, Norfolk.

I’ve got to know Adrian well through his scintillating performances with
T J Johnson, guesting with The Fallen Heroes as well as Barry Martyn and the Young Bloods at the 100 Club and at the 2009 and 2010 Autumn Jazz Parades in Hemsby, Norfolk. More recently I’ve filmed him performing with “The Adrian Cox Quartet” at The Crypt, St Martin in the Fields, London.

No matter what the occasion he is always stops to chat and he undoubtedly charms the ladies. Adrian featured in the 2010 British Jazz Awards on clarinet and double takes on saxophone with true star quality. Pity I missed him at Ronnie Scott’s recently but I always look forward
to getting together with him.

Geoff Cole’s Red Hot Five Take The Peartree by Storm!

The Peartree Monday Jazz Club, Welwyn Garden City, was highly privileged to welcome Geoff Cole’s Red Hot Five on Monday, 19th March.

Band leader Geoff Cole originally hails from Exeter and is as exhilarating a trombonist now as he was when he played with the Ken Colyer Jazzman Group between 1961 and 1971 along with his reeds man, Tony Pyke. He later became band leader of Georgia Jazz and toured with Brian White’s Magna Jazz Band before forming The Red Hot Five.

The band’s repertoire included a delightful variety of less frequently played favourites. Geoff’s and Tony’s skills of improvisation matched those of New Orleans jazz greats such as Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller, and along with Colin Bray on piano, Johhny Baker on drums and Andy Lawrence on bass, they received repeated enthusiastic applause from the Peartree fans.

By popular demand doubtless Geoff Cole’s Red Hot Five will be welcomed back at The Peartree.
