Django Reinhardt Improvisations By Spanish Musicians Albert Bello and Oriol Saña

Feature

Fanny Abela has introduced me to the Spanish based “Albert Bello and Oriol Saña Experiment”. Albert and Oriol are two distinguished Spanish musicians who are featuring scintillating and daring improvisations based on Django Reinhardt’s melodies.

AlbertBelloOriolSana

Fanny wrote to me: “The virtuosity of Albert and Oriol on stage, their positive attitude and their connection with the public, keep the audience in suspense throughout their shows. Thanks to their huge musical background, Albert and Oriol present a warmth in their unique yet recognisable style, mixing jazz, gipsy swing, bluegrass and classical music.”

How Else To Send Christmas Greetings To All

Painting

And what better Christmas scene than my painting of The Sun Inn, Lemsford. Especially as Ginny and I returned to the village, our wonderful home for 19 years, and to The Sun to join so many old friends at their joyous village Christmas Party last weekend. Including village jazz man, Bob Thomas of Thomcat Fame.

I wrote this poem to go with the painting. Perhaps it captures the warmth of Christmas conviviality.

To complete the ensemble, here is my Art&Verse print of Hushed Lemsford

“The Little Drummer Boy”

Sophia

Ronnie

Even if it doesn’t begin at the beginning I think you will agree with me that this YouTube is rather special.

I was caught changing over my “lens camera” and sometimes I wish I knew the numbers ahead of time. But please enjoy Sophia Ripley and “Drummer Boy” Ronnie Fenn, along with Alan Wakeman (saxophone), Nick Pugh (electric bass) and Mr Olney himself, Alan Haughton on keyboard, in their magical rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy”. The occasion? Olney Jazz Club’s Christmas Bash.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: AMY ROBERTS & RICHARD EXALL FEATURE THEIR LATEST CD AT THE WALNUT TREE

Amy and Richard with John Watson, drums; Bill Coleman, bass and Alan Haughton guesting on keyboard,

Amy and Richard with John Watson, drums; Bill Coleman, bass and Alan Haughton guesting on keyboard.

Following Amy’s recent announcement about their chosen future in jazz, Tad Newton was delighted to feature the Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club in Blisworth, Northants, Sunday lunchtime, 7th December.

Richard was especially pleased to welcome fans who left home at 5.30am to travel to the gig – including a group of Seaside Shuffle Jazz Club fans from Ramsgate in Kent – applauding them for going to such lengths in supporting live jazz.

So thank you Amy and Richard for a great session. And thank you Tad for live jazz in Northants and Bedfordshire at the Walnut Tree in Blisworth, The Castle in Wellingborough and at Bedford Golf Club, and for featuring great bands with young jazz musicians such as the RichardExall/Amy Roberts Quintet. With teamwork like this, live jazz has a great future.

AmyRichard2

Here is a YouTube filmed at The Walnut Tree session of just one of the numbers from the Quintet’s very latest CD “WHY NOT?”. As Amy explains, “Hushabye Mountain” is a ballad by Robert and Richard Sherman from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Amy is so mellow on flute and Richard stars as Dick Van Dyke.

Sammy Rimington Returns To The Black Bottom Club, Northampton

Band1

On Thursday, 4th December, Sammy Rimington made a hugely acclaimed return to The Black Bottom Club in Northampton, along with Finlay Milne, Mike Owen, John Richardson, Brian Harding, Colin Richardson and Ivor Johnson. Since he last played the club it’s taken on a new dimension and incorporated “Aunty Ruth’s Private Members Bar”.

Besides festival appearances, for the past few years I’ve made it to Sammy’s gigs in Chilham, Kent, where I was also privileged to attend his book signing in March, 2013. But this year I couldn’t make it to Chilham and so was over the moon to hear about his “Aunty Ruth” gig within striking distance of my new address.

A Wonderful Evening
So thank you Sammy and Louise for the big welcome on the night. And thank you also to Tad Newton for coming along with me and navigating me through the Northampton maize to the hidden venue!

Creative Editing
Like so many jazz clubs, The Black Bottom Club isn’t the most conducive for filming but with some “creative” editing I hope I’ve captured the ethos of a wonderful evening in the following YouTubes.
