Captured for YouTube: Baby Jools’ Jazzaholics “Black Bottom Stomp”

The Jazzaholics “revitalise” Jelly Roll Morton at
The Walnut Tree Jazz Club

Guesting with the band on clarinet Chris Tanner hailing from Australia via Copenhagen.

Baby Jools (drums, leader): Mike Owen (trombone): Jim Swinnerton (bass): Denny Ilett (trumpet), Brian Mellor (banjo); and special guest Chris Tanner (clarinet).

Note the “subtle” repositioning of the lens to focus on Baby Jools’ drum solo. Max Collie had the right idea featuring Jools “on high” in clear view of the camera!

“Cold Morning Shout”: Tuba Skinny at Fest Jazz, Châteauneuf-du-Faou, 2014

TubaSkinnyPleinAir

It was wonderful to video Tuba Skinny for a series of YouTubes during Fest Jazz 2014, several of which I have already featured on Jazz&Jazz. So here is another which initially I vetoed due to a brief  “stumbling fan glitch” towards the end of filming.

Now I am releasing it under my new “Take Two” Category of YouTubes – i.e. videos which I would have loved to have taken again yet still consider well worth viewing. So please, judge for yourselves.

Featuring Jazz&Jazz YouTubes of Doc Houlind’s Revival Jazz Band During their 2015 UK Tour

Doc-Houlind-at-Olney

Jesper Larson (clt); Lis Kroyer (pno); Ebbe Hansen (bjo); Doc Houlind (tpt); Brian Turnock (bs); Peter Goetz (tmb); Kenny Milne (dms)

I was privileged to video Doc Houlind’s Copenhagen band at the Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade and at Olney Jazz Club during their 2015 UK tour.

I captured the best footage for YouTubes at Olney because, although the Club was packed with enthusiastic fans, I was able to film from front of stage.

Here is a selection of my favourites.  First up, Sam Morgan’s Bogalusa Strut.

… plus “Cecilia”

… and “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans”

(It’s magical so I have included this YouTube despite a slight glitch in the footage. It happens in crowded jazz clubs and Olney was certainly packed full of fans!)

See also the earlier post featuring  “Burgundy Street Blues”.

Tim Curtis on Sousaphone

It was good to chat with Tim Curtis again yesterday at Lemsford Jazz Club.

He was playing sousaphone with Bill Freeman’s New Orleans Happy Jazz Band. It’s some time since we last met. Here is my portrait and poem of him on his beloved sousaphone with Bob Thomas & The Tomcats in the good old days of jazz at The Long & The Short Arm hostelry
in Lemsford Village.

Sadly yet another pub which closed its doors to jazz after ten wonderful years of hosting great bands organised by Bob Thomas.

Rare Footage of Tuba Skinny at Fest Jazz 2014

Erika2
Back in July, 2014, Tuba Skinny were one of the star bands at
Fest Jazz in Brittany

Barely had they flown into France and arrived at in Châteaneuf-du-Faou than they played at a pre-festival party in the informal of setting of the legendary Bar Tal ar Pont to welcome spectators and musicians for the weekend.

Tal-ar-Pont
I was privileged to film Tuba Skinny throughout the Festival but have only now decided to feature three more my YouTubes of them taken at their magical Bar Tal ar Pont gig. The bar was packed, lighting wasn’t the best, and to avoid vexing the fans I filmed from a position at the back where I was as inconspicuous as possible.

Even so, having just taken a fresh look at the footage I’ve decided it’s magical enough to merit releasing. Watch out for the tale of the borrowed Tuba!

Tuba Skinny are: Erika Lewis (vocals, bass drum), Shaye Cohn (cornet), Todd Burdick (Tuba),
Jason Lawrence (Banjo), John Doyle (Clarinet), Barnabus Jones (Trombone),
Robin Rapuzzi (Washboard)

If you go to “SEARCH JAZZ & JAZZ” (column to the right) and enter “Tuba Skinny” you will find other posts featuring Tuba Skinny YouTubes).

Eva Fernández Starring with Joan Chamorro and Andrea Motis at Fest Jazz 2014

Joan-Andrea-Eva

I pined for Fest Jazz at Chateauneuf du Faou, Brittany, this year. Trevor Stent kindly kept the doors open until the last moment but circumstances prevented Ginny and I
making the journey.

So I have delved into my MP4s to search for footage which would cheer me up and discovered movies of Eva, Joan and Andrea not yet uploaded for YouTube.

I hadn’t uploaded Andrea performing “Butterfly” until now because filming was cut short due to jostling fans just as she was about to play her trumpet solo. But it’s still magical so I didn’t want to leave it out. And she plays trumpet in “I Remember Clifford”!

Trevor has sent me photos of this year’s equally successful festival which I will post on Jazz&Jazz. Any YouTubes to come of the bands this year, Trevor?

Leroy Jones Quintet UK Tour Friday, 23 October/Wednesday 11 November

LeroyPoster

“A rare opportunity to see legendary New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones joined by Ian Shaw (“Our finest jazz singer” – Time Out) & Joe Stilgoe (star of High Society at the Old Vic in 2015, “truly remarkable” Sir Michael Parkinson), for a wonderful night of music. Expect to hear the swing of New Orleans, all with some fiery soul, bebop & tunes of their own thrown in.”

The Leroy Jones Quintet Tour Information

It’s five years since I met Leroy Jones, albeit briefly, in New Orleans at Donna’s Bar during the 2010 French Quarter Festival. It would be wonderful to meet up with him again, even if again only briefly, during his October/November UK Tour. Perhaps at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, London, or at The St Albans Arena, St Albans, Hertfordshire.

Tour Date Details

At Pizza Espress, Dean Street, London

“Leroy’s career, spanning over four decades, has seen him play with the likes of Harry Connick Jr, record with the likes of Dr John & appear on shows such as Late Night with David Letterman & Oprah Winfrey.”
