Launched as recently as 2011, Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle is just a small, friendly festival, and the organisers and fans want to keep it that way. Local bands based in Kent, along with their fans, treasure the opportunities it offers but without question it is also fast becoming a favourite with top ranking bands.
Jazz&Jazz filmed each session and this year and Pete Leonard’s Red Hot & Blue Jazz Band got The Shuffle off to a rip-roaring start at Ramsgate Small Boat Owners’ Club on Friday, 15th July. Here are just two YouTubes featuring the band.

Windswept, but nothing daunted, Burt Butler & His Jazz Pilgrims jazz it up for festival fans and holiday makers. Perhaps not on a bamboo isle, but against the backdrop of
a bamboo tree.
Continuing with the theme!

A fan commented on one of my Hippocampus Jass Gang YouTubes:
“This band will become famous!”
I am indebted to The Bay Jazz Club, Enfield, and to Hippocampus for permitting me to film them on Tuesday, 21st June, during their UK tour. The Bay is an excellent venue for filming compared, for instance, with festivals where it isn’t always easy to achieve best results.
Hailing from France, Hippocampus surpassed all my expectations. Much of their repertoire draws its inspiration from the hot jazz of the early New Orleans era, yet with an intensity and inimitable charm all of their own. With this, plus their interpretations of French and European Jazz and Swing, they are indeed going places.
“The Gang” are, en française:
Joseph Vu Van: Banjo, chant et arrangements
Pierre Bayse: Clarinette, clarinette basse, chant
Heykel Bouden: Violon, chant
Alexis Chauvelier: Guitare, chant
Gildas Le Garrec: Contrebasse, chant
Simon Laurent: Batterie
“They are a breath of fresh air”: Just Jazz Magazine 2011
“They are making music in a style unlike any others I know of”: Jazz Guide 2014
… and so to the Jazz&Jazz YouTubes

Following up on demand to re-feature my Jazz&Jazz Tuba Skinny YouTubes taken at Fest Jazz, 2014, here is another of my favourites: “Big Chief Battle Axe”. Performed en plein air, Tuba Skinny street style. No surprise that Tuba Skinny stole the show!

Tuba Skinny filmed in the Grand Marquee at Fest Jazz, 2014.
Tuba Skinny took Fest Jazz by storm in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, Brittany, in July, 2014. The packed grand marquee audience was spellbound. This was just one of just two numbers I could film in the marquee without fans and dancers blocking the view. Live jazz at its best and not a chance of “Take Twos”. But then that’s what Fest Jazz is about: fun, great jazz and DANCING.
Come back soon Tuba Skinny.
And fans, why not book now for Fest Jazz 2016!

Having followed Hungary’s Bohém Ragtime Jazz Band for some months and featured them regularly on Jazz&Jazz, when I discovered that Botany Bay Jazz Club had booked them for a Friday Night Special on 6th May, I seized the opportunity to see them live – and, with bandleader Tamás Ittzés’ and the Bay’s permission, to film them.
It was an evening of outstanding jazz. The Club was packed with their own members and guests from The Amersham Jazz Club who had made the journey to share the experience.
So here is my selection of Jazz&Jazz YouTubes which tell their own story. Enjoy!

Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”
Trevor Stent, Good Time Jazz
“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
