Not to be missed! So make a day of it in Covent Garden, on Thursday, 22nd June. Arrive in good time – the ceremony starts at 4.30pm.
Enjoy the seaside, enjoy the sea air, enjoy the camaraderie and most of all,
enjoy the Jazz at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle.
Gypsy jazz comes to Loughton!
Gypsy jazz group Trio Manouche, with Quentin Collins on trumpet, play a
fund-raising concert for the National Jazz Archive on Saturday 24 June in Loughton, Essex.
In honour of Smiffy, my portrait of him playing washboard in “The Long and Short Arm”, Lemsford.
Brian Smith, aka “Smiffy” was born in The Long Arm and Short Arm pub in Lemsford Village just outside Welwyn Garden City, long enough ago to have followed some of the great jazz bands of the 1950s and 60s. Those were the days when Hatfield, Potters Bar, Enfield and Welwyn Garden City were hot beds of jazz.
The Happy Jazz Band
Presenting Two Magical YouTube Versions of “Maggie”.
The first, a unique Jazz Club rendition by The Happy Jazz Men on Sunday 11th June, 2017, at Lemsford Jazz Club.
Recapturing Magical Moments
Popular American Jazz Classic sung by vocalist and gospel diva Denise Gordon, accompanied by jazz legend Roy Williams on trombone, Boysey Bartrum on sax, Tomas Pedersen on bass, Bobby Orr on the drums and Alan Haughton on piano
at Olney Jazz Club.
First posted in back in July, 2014, but reposted due to enhancements afforded by recent software upgrades. Couldn’t remove the dancers from front of stage, however, nor quite compensate for
the starry night stage lighting. But hey! that’s jazz!

Sadly John Bennett is no longer with us. Yet another Jazz Great Star to depart the scene.
What better way to commemorate him than to repost Alan Bateman’s magical portrait
of him back in his days with Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen.
Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”

“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
