Jazznorthwest Introduces Alex Clarke – “a young lady causing quite a stir”
In his latest Jazz North West Newsletter Fred Burnett introduced “a young lady causing quite a stir in the NW”.
Fred first mentioned sixteen year old Alex Clarke in his 25th October Newsletter after she made an appearance Saturday night at Roa Island with Martin Bennett’s band, and then on Sunday with The Sun Street Stompers at the Robert Gillow in Lancaster. Mike Lovell followed up by inviting Alex to play with his SIX-IN-A-BAR band at The North Euston Hotel in Fleetwood.
Fred went along and captured the above video on his phone.
So as Fred says “It’s obvious why Alex is beginning to get noticed in this part of Lancashire. You can judge for yourself”!
If you’d like to know more about this young lady, check out www.alexclarkejazz.co.uk

Suzanne Mellard and the New Standards Trio
Suzanne Mellard must be the best kept secret on the British jazz scene. Completely self taught she has a unique voice among her contemporaries and has developed from many influences starting with Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter through to Mark Murphy, Eddie Jefferson and Kurt Elling. She has performed with many well respected names in the genre including, Dave O’Higgins, Bill Watrous, Dave Newton, Brian Dee and Darius Brubeck.
One highlight of her career was to be invited to perform with Dame Cleo Laine’s band featuring Alan Ganley, John Horler, Mark Nightingale, Malcolm Creese and the legendary Sir John Dankworth at The Stables, Wavendon.
’The ideal jazz voice…intimate and rich in the low range, with great control in all registers’
Darius Brubeck

Jazz&Jazz Portrait of Leroy Jones inspired by one of the final gigs at Donna’s Bar, Rampart Street, New Orleans

… Or a Jazz&Jazz Souvenir Poster!
I spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening at Donna’s Bar on Rampart Street during the French Quarter Festival back in 2010 when I first met Leroy. Sadly not long after the venue closed down. But when Leroy and Katya toured the UK I was delighted to catch up with them in The Arena, St Albans (see the link below).

Should you be interested in a signed Fine Art Giclée Print of either the portrait or the portrait & poem, or perhaps a print of the Souvenir Poster, please email me at [email protected].
The aim of www.jazzandjazz.com is to help raise the profile of jazz worldwide – for musicians, bands, clubs, festivals and fans. But funds are needed to make progress in achieving these goals. There is a Jazz&Jazz Donate Button in the right hand column and contributions will be
gratefully received.
Plus all the revenue raised from the sale of Jazz&Jazz Fine Art Prints also goes towards
the costs of covering and featuring jazz.

“This music is happy music. It makes you feel good!”: Leroy Jones
Major Impact! The Magnificent Seven Jazz Band
“Calling on their experience of performing with Europe’s most influential jazz bands of the last sixty years, the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN combines a wealth of experience with youthful exuberance. Paying homage to the great jazz masters of the early jazz period as well as keeping alive the sounds of the swing era, the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN’s repertoire also celebrates the jazz revival of the 1950’s, tipping their hat to the great bands of Barber, Ball and Bilk. This band takes no prisoners!”
Theirs is a varied repertoire, with compositions and arrangements by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, Errol Garner, Fats Waller, Chucho Valdez, Paquito D’Rivera and many more.
Amy Roberts – clarinet, flute and saxophones
Richard Exall – clarinet and saxophones
Ian Bateman – trombone
Ben Cummings – trumpet
Nick Millward – drums
Bill Coleman – bass
