“I’ve received your information from Al Nicholls who plays sax with Blue Harlem, among other groups. Al has been helping promote my band in the UK over the past year. I am an American singer based in Paris, France, with a five-piece band (guitar, doublebass, drums, trombone and saxophone).

“We tour extensively in France and we toured the UK in August, 2015, playing sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s, Boisdale of Canary Wharf and Blues Kitchen Camden.”

To date Robyn Bennett & Bang Bang is booked for two UK gigs:
• Friday, October 28th at Kings Arms, Fulham
• Saturday, October 29th at Boisdale Restaurant, Canary Wharf
• Sunday October 30th Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club

They are also looking for another gig for Thursday, 27th October and possibly for Monday, 31st October and would appreciate any suggestions of venues to contact.

“Jazz In The Park”, Bedford, this coming Thursday, 25th August, presents two very special musicians, JazzFm’s 2016 UK Jazz Vocalist of the Year, Lauren Kinsella accompanied
by pianist Matt Robinson.

As always there will be a Q&A session with the artists in the second set.

Irish vocalist and composer Lauren is currently based in London and has become one of the city’s most adventurous artists, performing throughout the UK and Europe as a soloist and bandleader. A passionate educator, Lauren holds a senior lecturing post at Leeds Conservatoire and is the featured vocalist in several recent projects.

Awarded the Young Musicwide Performance Award in 2010, the Kenny Wheeler Prize in 2013, the THSH Birmingham Jazzlines Fellowship in 2015, Lauren has received commissions from
BBC Radio 3 and from Marsden Jazz Festival.

Reviewed worldwide, Lauren regularly features on several radio stations including BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM and BBC Radio Scotland. To date, she has released several critically acclaimed albums.

Born in Dublin, she completed her masters at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Doors open at 7.40pm and the session starts at 8pm.

Spanish Tapas (£8.95) and Blood Orange & Chocolate Tart (£4.95), along with Jugs of Sangria (£15) will be available to purchase at the Cafe.

Growing up Jewish – Yoshio and Keiko Remember Louis

It depicts Joel’s short documentary portrait of Japanese jazz musicians Yoshio and Keiko Toyama, seen through their annual visit to the grave of Louis Armstrong at Flushing Cemetery in Queens, NY.

A grandson of slaves, born in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans known as the
“Back of  Town.”

Louis father abandoned the family when he was just an infant. His mother became a prostitute and the Louis and his sister had to live with their grandmother. Early in life he proved to be gifted for music and with three other kids he sang in the streets of New Orleans. His first gains were the coins that were thrown to them. A Jewish family, the Karnofskys, who had immigrated from Lithuania to the USA had pity for the 7-year-old boy and brought him into their home. Given work in their business, he remained in this Jewish family’s home where, for the first time in his life he was treated with kindness and tenderness. When he went to bed Mrs. Karnofsky taught him a Russian Lullaby that he would sing with her.  Later, he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs.

Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. The Karnofskys gave him money to buy his first musical instrument as was the custom in the Jewish families. They sincerely admired his musical talent. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions, such as St. James Infirmary and Go Down Moses.

The little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who had adopted him in 1907.  In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore a Star of David and said that in this family he had learned “how to live real life and determination.”

You might recognize his name.  This little boy was called Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong.

Louis Armstrong  proudly spoke fluent Yiddish!

Fest Jazz Hosts Joan Chamorro’s Sant Andreu Jazz Masterclass – Includes Jazz&Jazz YouTubes

A key event at Fest Jazz 2016 was Joan Chamorro’s enlightening masterclass on how to teach jazz to young people. It was a unique opportunity for fans to meet and question this extraordinarily gifted man who is having such amazing success with his very personal and intuitive methods of teaching the music.

Joan has become a good friend and is very supportive of Jazz&Jazz. After the Masterclass I seized the opportunity to ask him how he can tell when a youngster has what it takes to become a star. His reply demonstrated his modesty and sincerity. All of his students are equally important to him. They themselves have to have the desire to become good musicians. Then, if he recognises they have what it takes, he will encourage them to go further and achieve their full potential. But no way is it his intention to become their agent. Thanks go to my namesake, Peter Butler, a key member of the Fest Jazz team, for translating!

Sant Andreu – an Independent Project
The Sant Andreu Jazz Band is Joan’s very own project, has no connection with municipal schools and receives no grants or public funding. As both their teacher and mentor, he organises classes and rehearsals on his own premises for his potential stars and if they decide for themselves they want to take up careers in music he will set them on the right paths.

With his unique coaching methods, Joan cannot help but make stars, whilst at the same time exposing all of his Sant Andreu students to the wonders of music and in particular jazz.

Without question Joan is one of my Jazz Heroes and close to, if not top of my list. He deserves our support.

Fun, Exhilaration and Interaction
I filmed the following numbers during the band’s Fest Jazz Masterclass performances. They demonstrate the youngsters’ fun, exhilaration and interaction with each other and love for the music. Following that are YouTubes taken backstage during one of the band’s sessions in the main marquee. Why backstage? One, because there was no room for a clear view filming front of stage due to the packed audience. Two, because it enabled me to capture the interaction of the youngsters between themselves and with Joan – and even some of their hushed backstage banter.

Fest Jazz 2016 Presents “Panique sur le Manche”: Vive la Jeunesse en le Jazz!

“Panique sur le Manche” stars talented youngster 13 year old Eliot Busca on lead guitar with his father on bass starring at Fest Jazz 2016. Eliot lives close by Châteauneuf-du-Foau.

Translated into English “le Manche “ or rather “manche de guitare” is the guitar fretboard, but there’s no sign of “panique” or fret in Eliot’s performance!

Vive la jeunesse en le jazz!

The Ben Holder Quartet Takes Fest Jazz By Storm

Trevor Stent stopped Ginny and me on his way to take in Ben Holder in Fest Jazz Scene 3. “How’s Ben doing,” he asked. Ginny replied, “The Marquee is overflowing with fans. He’s taken them by storm.” When he emailed me after the festival, Trevor commented: “It was great to see Ben Holder so well received, he is an extraordinary talent.”

This is one of my “Take Two YouTubes” because, having been almost swept off my feet by the massing fans while filming, if I could have filmed it again I would have! But rather than “taking it away” I’ve left the footage unedited to see if anyone recognises the fellow glimpsed in the
very last frame!!!
