Keyboard Virtuoso Craig Milverton “Remembers April”

Craig’s dynamic keyboard solo “I’ll Remember April” with The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band at Olney Jazz Club in November, 2015.

Filming live at gigs doesn’t afford opportunities for “Take Two” reshoots and I have discarded many of my movies which, for one reasonor another, fell fractionally short of perfection – not on the part of the musicians but due to the cameraman. In this number, Craig’s keyboard virtuosity is brilliant, even though I marginally clipped the beginning as I focused my magic lens.

So this movie qualifies as one of my “If only Take Two” YouTubes and very worthily so!

“Yellow Dog Blues” The Bateman Brothers at Olney Jazz Club

W.C. Handy’s “Yellow Dog Blues” performed in the style of Louis Armstrong by
The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band at Olney Jazz Club in November, 2015.
Ian Bateman tells the story.

This feature is for a very good, longstanding friend in Monrovia, LA, who recently told me it’s one of his favourite Blues numbers.

Remembering Jim Pack (Jimbo) Grand Marshall Supreme

Pete Lay recently posted in Fred Burnett’s JazzNorthWest News Update this immensely sad news:

“It is with regret that I have to tell you the sad news about the passing of our good friend and jazzer Jim Pack (Jimbo). He passed away at around 4.00am this morning (December 16th).
Here’s to Jimbo.”

Jimbo’s Funeral
Jim’s funeral will be at the Beckenham Crematorium, Elmers End Road, BR3 4TD
at 3.45pm on Thursday, January 21st 2016.

I have much to thank Jimbo for. He regularly lead the Umbrella Parade at the Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade and back in 2008, shortly after I had rediscovered my jazz roots, I so much admired his energy and flamboyance, that he inspired one of my first jazz paintings.

So in his honour I simply had to feature the painting again here, along with the poem his jaunty style inspired. Jimbo wrote the most wonderful letter of thanks to me when I presented him with a Giclée Print of the painting and poem. Regrettably after our recent house move I haven’t yet been able to lay my hands on it.

And brollies on show.

Braced against a cool October breeze, sprightly Grand Marshal Jimbo leads the Umbrella Parade
at the Ken Colyer Trust 2008 Jazz Festival in Hemsby, Norfolk,
where Good Time Jazz was enjoyed by one and all.

When I launched jazzandjazz.com, Jimbo’s portrait and poem simply had to be one of the first posts back in February, 2012

Following near disaster in the recent Cumbrian floods when their band wagon was all but swept away along with all on board plus their musical instruments, Old Green River musicians are looking forward to being safely navigated into calmer Ramsgate waters – thanks to their intrepid leader and hero of the Cumbrian rescue, Martin Bennett.

“A truly gifted artist”

Brian Blain, London Jazz News

Already a star in his native Denmark, singer, songwriter and saxophonist Mads Mathias has captured the hearts of music lovers with his charismatic performances, spirited personality and creative original songs, leading Gaffa to describe him as “an international star in the making“.

Inspired and influenced by the great jazz vocalists of the past and present from Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr, and with a deep respect for the crooner tradition, Mathias is nevertheless an original talent with a unique and effortlessly charming vocal delivery and a skill for writing catchy and memorable, stylishly crafted tunes with the feel of timeless swing-era classics.

Mathias returns to the UK after a sold-out debut tour in 2015, with a programme of music from his album ‘Free Falling’, (which won him the award for ‘Best New Jazz Act’ at the Danish Music Awards), plus new songs from his forthcoming album alongside well-loved and lesser-known standards.

Looking Ahead to 2016 at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth

Occasionally, I have been criticised for featuring jazz only in my own locality!

If you explore Jazz&Jazz thoroughly I’m sure you will agree this is not the case. I help promote jazz not only close to home and not only in the UK but on the Continent, in America, Japan – in fact worldwide. But obviously no way can I myself globe trot for jazz. I have to rely on submissions from festivals, clubs, bands, musicians and fans from around the world.

But I would love to be able to cover jazz further afield myself and film YouTubes of bands playing in a variety of locations. Just today I received this message: “Congratulation on the thriving news feed you are providing for us jazzers, and thanks for the hard work that must be involved!” I replied, “Frankly I’m looking into honest ways of raising a dime or two to help finance my efforts.” Why? Because then I would be able to reach out in person more often way beyond my own locality.

Sorry to digress but I thought it a good opportunity to get this message across at the same time as promoting the variety of jazz bands booked to appear at one of the several clubs within striking distance of home in the first six months of 2016. And this is just one of Tad Newton’s jazz venues.
