Reaching Out From Japan The Toyamas celebrate their love affair with Satchmo, Jazz and New Orleans

Yoshio-Pupils

“Every year when Yoshio and Keiko Toyama visit New Orleans to perform at Satchmo Summerfest, they arrive with Yoshio’s traditional jazz band, several members of their foundation, and gifts. This year was no different. As I waited for the presentation to begin in the band room at Landry-Walker High School, I checked out the horns and the banjo
on the table.

“Each one had the same message: ‘This instrument is donated by Wonderful World Jazz Foundation, Tokyo, Japan. A present to the children of New Orleans from jazz fans in Japan. To express our thanks for jazz, which New Orleans, Satchmo and your country have given us.’ That pretty much sums up what the Toyamas are all about.”

“Japan’s Yoshio Toyama is much more than a Louis Armstrong impersonator – although he is skilled in that regard. His depth of knowledge, technical ability and obvious love for the music, and the city that initially inspired it, enables him to transcend mere mimicry to deliver lively, spry and joyous sets. He’s become a favourite every year at Satchmo Summerfest.”

Celebrating Satchmo’s Birthday in New York City

Here is a selection of YouTubes of Yoshio playing with Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, in New York’s Iguana Restaurant and Dance Lounge on 4th August, Louis Armstrong’s Birthday.

My thanks to Yoshio and Keiko for the privilege of featuring their August Satchmo visits to New Orleans and New York on Jazz&Jazz.

Russell Bennett – A Jazz Legend in His Lifetime

Russ(LC)

Jazz UK has been stunned by the tragic news of Russell Bennett’s untimely death. His father, Martin Bennett posted this very brief message on Facebook: “Russell Bennett died on Saturday evening at 6 pm. Funeral arrangements later. Devastating.”

As many of you who have access to Facebook will have seen, messages of condolence have been flooding in from across the jazz community. Please also see the message from Rich Bennett about his brother’s funeral at the foot of this post.

Russ was an incredibly versatile trombonist, a very special, friendly person, and a jester – his antics on stage were legendary. I first met him at The Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade a few years ago where, during an interval he invited me backstage to share cake with the band.

He will be sorely missed by scores of musicians and fans alike, particularly members of the “Bennett Brothers” band, and above all, by his family.

With his feel for the music, his flamboyance on stage and his countless fans, his future in jazz was firmly assured yet so tragically cut short.

I took the rather iconic photo above of Russ and Rich in juxtaposition on stage a while ago. I use it in the masthead on my “Jazz and Jazz” Facebook page where it will remain for the duration in Russ’s honour. Included below is a collection of some other Jazz&Jazz photos of The Master.

Many of his fellow musicians and fans have already paid tribute to Russ on Facebook but it would be a wonderful to see your memories of him included in “Speak Your Mind” below.

Thank you, Russ, for the years of sheer enjoyment you have given jazz fans everywhere, so tragically cut short, but not before you had made a lasting impression on us all.

Richard Bennett has asked for his brave message about Russ to be shared.

“Never thought I’d be saying this…… My brothers funeral is a week Friday. That’s Friday the 30th of October. It will be held at St Michael’s church. Bude at 3pm. Please share this as there will be a lot of people wanting to know who I may not be fb friends with. Any musicians who know they are coming please let me know. I’m hoping to put on a party afterwards n would be good to know who’s around. Thanks to everyone of you for all your lovely messages. Russ would be overwhelmed. Cheers all. Rich X”

Russ’s Funeral

Martin Bennett has emailed details of Russell’s funeral: “The funeral service will be held at St Michael’s Church, Bude, Cornwall, on Friday 30 October at 3pm followed by a musical celebration of Russell’s life at The Carriers Inn, Bude. The funeral will take place the following day at 1 pm at Landscove Church, S Devon – more of a family function”.

Focus on Violinist Ben Holder, Jazz Virtuoso

Ben Holder (violin), Malcom Garrett (drums). Paul Jeffries (bass), Jez Cook (guitar)

Ben Holder (violin), Malcom Garrett (drums). Paul Jeffries (bass), Jez Cook (guitar)

A key aim of Jazz&Jazz is to focus on and promote young jazz musicians and their bands and to endeavour to strike down the divide between ageing jazz fans and
the new kids on the block.

My YouTubes are something of a revelation. Those of  “senior” bands and musicians, no matter their former glory, receive far few hits than my YouTubes of our emerging younger generation of jazz bands – and they are out there aplenty! But there’s more to it than that. Younger generation UK musicians and bands don’t seem to get nearly as many hits on YouTube as up and coming overseas jazz bands and musicians.

I don’t intend explore the reasons at this stage, but rather to feature a 26 year old UK violinist and jazz phenomenon Ben Holder. Ben and his quartet deserve every bit the following of other bands and as is evident from the following YouTubes, they appeal just as much to older fans as to their own generation of jazz fans.

Special thanks to Tad Newton for giving me the opportunity to film at his Walnut Tree Club in Blisworth and at his Bedford Golf Club venue. Tad is every bit as eager to publicise and support younger bands as I am.

It would be interesting to get views from Jazzers of all ages in response to this and I would welcome comments in “Speak Your Mind” below. Then later I will strive to analyse the reasons for the differences.

Meanwhile please enjoy the dynamic exuberance of Ben and his band.

Featuring Jazz&Jazz YouTubes of Doc Houlind’s Revival Jazz Band During their 2015 UK Tour

Doc-Houlind-at-Olney

I was privileged to video Doc Houlind’s Copenhagen band at the Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade and at Olney Jazz Club during their 2015 UK tour.

I captured the best footage for YouTubes at Olney because, although the Club was packed with enthusiastic fans, I was able to film from front of stage.

Here is a selection of my favourites.  First up, Sam Morgan’s Bogalusa Strut.

… plus “Cecilia”

… and “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans”

(It’s magical so I have included this YouTube despite a slight glitch in the footage. It happens in crowded jazz clubs and Olney was certainly packed full of fans!)

See also the earlier post featuring  “Burgundy Street Blues”.

… with Jesper Capion Larsen’s magical rendition of George Lewis’s

Burgundy Street Blues

One of my all time favourites and third time lucky for capturing Jesper’s wonderful rendition, as on the two previous occasions – at The Blue Posts in Soho and Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade – fans prevented me filming from the best angle. In fact in The Blue Posts the fans were packed in so tightly that I found myself almost face to face with Jesper – so much so that far from filming him I could have played the notes on his clarinet!

So here is my YouTube taken at Olney Jazz Club on Tuesday, 6th October.
