Burt Butler’s Jazz Pilgrims at The Two Brewers, Whitstable, Kent

two-brewers-pic-webb

It was great to catch up with Burt Butler and his Jazz Pilgrims on Friday, 28th May, during a weekend visit to my old stomping grounds in East Kent. These two YouTubes feature The Pilgrims at just one of their venues, their regular Whitstable “Two Brewers” Friday haunt.

Quite an atmosphere with crowded fans close up to the band or peering round the huge central chimney breast and the musicians ducking and diving behind timber columns. But Burt and John Finch held firm on centre stage. That’s the magic of jazz!

Featuring Cool Jazz Collective at The Landsdowne Club, Luton

On Sunday, 10th April, in keeping my longstanding promise to Elaine Hatton to feature her Quintet, Cool Jazz Collective on Jazz&Jazz, I took in jazz at The Landsdowne Club, Luton, for the first time. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon – great music, great musicians and a very fine vocalist!

I filmed several numbers for YouTubes to be featured on Jazz&Jazz, beginning with “Deed I Do”.

Niklas Robertson (saxophone/clarinet/vocals), Jan Karlsson (bass), Jonathan Gustafsson (trumpet).

Touring the UK from Sweden, Mysto’s Hot Lips Jazz Band rounded off Tad Newton’s
St Valentines Jazz Weekend at The Castle, Wellingborough, with a stunning session of hot jazz and hot moves, enthralling a full house of fans in The Castle Theatre.

If you’ve not seen Mysto’s Hot Lips watch out for them. Delightful musicians full of exuberance and aged from their early thirties up to leader and trombonist Pider Åvall in his dynamic early 70s.

Who knows when Mysto’s Hot Lips will next tour the UK? So I’m thrilled to present this selection of YouTubes I took on the day.

Jazz&Jazz YouTubes
The following Jazz&Jazz YouTubes were filmed at DixieMix’s show stopping gig during Tad Newton’s highly successful St Valentine’s Jazz Weekend at The Castle Theatre, Wellingborough. So brilliant was it, I would have filmed the entire show, but I’m a jazz fan and I was there to enjoy the live performance as much as to take movies! Great to meet you at last, Simon!

Dukes-Natchez

Recently released, The DUKES of Dixieland recorded live at the 2015
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

“This rollicking new album, released on 18th September, spotlights the versatility and range of this iconic band with a set of classic Crescent City R&B and Latin-tinged jazz, all performed with crack timing and boisterous spirit.”

Focus on Violinist Ben Holder, Jazz Virtuoso

A key aim of Jazz&Jazz is to focus on and promote young jazz musicians and their bands and to endeavour to strike down the divide between ageing jazz fans and
the new kids on the block.

My YouTubes are something of a revelation. Those of  “senior” bands and musicians, no matter their former glory, receive far few hits than my YouTubes of our emerging younger generation of jazz bands – and they are out there aplenty! But there’s more to it than that. Younger generation UK musicians and bands don’t seem to get nearly as many hits on YouTube as up and coming overseas jazz bands and musicians.

I don’t intend explore the reasons at this stage, but rather to feature a 26 year old UK violinist and jazz phenomenon Ben Holder. Ben and his quartet deserve every bit the following of other bands and as is evident from the following YouTubes, they appeal just as much to older fans as to their own generation of jazz fans.

Special thanks to Tad Newton for giving me the opportunity to film at his Walnut Tree Club in Blisworth and at his Bedford Golf Club venue. Tad is every bit as eager to publicise and support younger bands as I am.

It would be interesting to get views from Jazzers of all ages in response to this and I would welcome comments in “Speak Your Mind” below. Then later I will strive to analyse the reasons for the differences.

Meanwhile please enjoy the dynamic exuberance of Ben and his band.

Featuring Jazz&Jazz YouTubes of Doc Houlind’s Revival Jazz Band During their 2015 UK Tour

Doc-Houlind-at-Olney

Jesper Larson (clt); Lis Kroyer (pno); Ebbe Hansen (bjo); Doc Houlind (tpt); Brian Turnock (bs); Peter Goetz (tmb); Kenny Milne (dms)

I was privileged to video Doc Houlind’s Copenhagen band at the Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade and at Olney Jazz Club during their 2015 UK tour.

I captured the best footage for YouTubes at Olney because, although the Club was packed with enthusiastic fans, I was able to film from front of stage.

Here is a selection of my favourites.  First up, Sam Morgan’s Bogalusa Strut.

… plus “Cecilia”

… and “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans”

(It’s magical so I have included this YouTube despite a slight glitch in the footage. It happens in crowded jazz clubs and Olney was certainly packed full of fans!)

See also the earlier post featuring  “Burgundy Street Blues”.
