Portrait of Chris Tyle on Cornet at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle, 2011

Chris Tyle guested with Pete Lays’ Gambit Jazzmen at the 2011
Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle.

I presented a fine art Giclée print of my jazz portrait of Chris to him at the 2011 Autumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby and was delighted with his response: “Why, you’ve even added some PR for me in the summary!” He was referring to his account of the onstage antics of legendary Jack Teagarden – “saxophone mechanic”!

Chris Tyle isn’t only a virtuoso on cornet, drums and clarinet, he’s also a noted jazz historian, educator and raconteur supreme. Based in Portland, Oregon, he is a frequent visitor to the UK. If ever you get to meet him, be sure to ask him about the time when  Jack Teagarden – saxophone “mechanic” supreme – took out his tool kit on stage to repair his saxophone, urging the band
to play on.
