Celebrating the Joy of Jazz
Ginny and I should have been there on Sunday, 17th January, but I came down sick and so we couldn’t make it! So thanks, Adrian, for finding takers for our places who hadn’t wanted to miss out. Then Tony Leppard came to the rescue with great photos of the show – so all was not lost – except perhaps a YouTube or two! But I do have others of Adrian even if not at Ronnie Scott’s.

“As this is a jazz club we are going to start out with a very brief history of jazz going back to a very early number, “I Got Rhythm” and blend that into a 50s BeeBop number called “Anthropology”.

Jazz&Jazz photographer Laurence Cumming took these photos of Johnny Rodgers at
The Winning Post, Twickenham, in August 2015. He and I thought jazz fans would
appreciate our posting them on Jazz&Jazz in memory of a wonderful and
much loved musician.
Johnny’s funeral is at 1.00pm on Tuesday, 26th January, at St. Mary’s Church, Off Church Road, Burton End, Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, CM24 8UB. All are welcome at the church but family only at the graveside, please. There will be a wake which will be announced at the service. Thank you, Barry Palser, for this information.
Latest information received from Barry: “Johnny’s ‘Celebration’ will take place at Bishops Stortford Football Club, Pro-Kit Stadium, Dunmow Road, Bishops Stortford, Essex CM23 5RG. Plenty of parking available.”

No need for a prologue to introduce Gypsy Fire at Olney Jazz Club! Stuart Carter-Smith’s introduction covers all angles: “This place is pretty sexy isn’t it! It’s like being in Vegas with all the lights!” The Jazz&Jazz YouTube reveals all.

Happy Jazzin’ in 2016, Olney fans and thanks Alan Haughton for your wonderful Club. It might be somewhat out in the sticks of rural Buckinghamshire but it sure “bucks” the trend of jazz clubs’ declining popularity. And just up the road from Olney is another popular club, The Walnut Tree in Blisworth, Northants, where Alan frequently plays keyboard with Tad Newton’s Jazzfriends.

Always a great Christmas Season Gig, Tad and his band excelled themselves playing “Watermelon Man” with Xmas flourishes to a packed and enthusiastic
Walnut Tree Jazz Club audience on Sunday, 20th December.
Tad on trombone, Alan Haughton (keyboard), Tomas Pedersen (bass), Ronnie Fenn (drums), Gary Wood (trumpet with that Xmas flourish), Trevor Whiting (saxophone)

When Dennis Vick named his band Red River Stompers back in 1977 his wife suggested
that as he was born in Fenny Stratford, the band should be renamed
The Fenny Stompers Jazzband. Almost 40 years on the Fenny Stompers
are always warmly welcomed at Lemsford Jazz Club.
Make sure you don’t miss their Lemsford Gig on Sunday, 10th January.
Lemsford Jazz Club fans enjoyed a New Year’s treat when French Band “La Planche a Laver” totally resuscitated them from post holiday blues on Saturday, 2nd January. Numbers were well up and spirits were high. A great beginning for jazz in Lemsford, Welwyn Garden City, in 2016.
Thanks “Smiffy” for helping to keep jazz going in Hertfordshire!

“It is with deep sadness I have to announce that Johnny Rodgers passed away on Sunday evening January 3rd 2016. Not only a really nice guy, we have lost a wonderful clarinet player. He will be sorely missed.
“I know you all would like to share my condolences to his wife Cathy and to Johnny’s daughter and grandchildren.
“R.I.P. dear friend, your pain is finally over.
With regrets
Pete”
Johnny fought long and hard against his illness and even played his beloved clarinet with Pete’s Gambit Jazzmen at The Autumn Jazz Parade last September, the last time I spoke to him. He was one of the first jazz musicians to inspire my Jazz&Jazz Paintings and as a tribute, here is my portrait of him on saxophone during the 2011 Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival.
At the time I wrote this poem to accompany the portrait:
Passion Personified
Sparkling hues
Rhythm and blues
Dazzling jazz
Razzmatazz
Passion personified

Popular belief is that Jazz has had its day. Not so! There are plenty of great bands on the jazz circuits - playing at Concerts, Clubs, Festivals. People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark.
“Jazz & Jazz” is an invaluable platform for news about young bands and musicians. It’s a great way for organisers like me to know what is going on! The enthusiasm of Peter Butler is inspirational and infectious and has certainly done much to boost the reputation of Fest Jazz beyond the boundaries of Brittany. Long may the site continue and flourish!”
Trevor Stent, Good Time Jazz
“Dear Peter, You have embarked on a lonely road. There have been few people painting New Orleans musicians over the years. There was one guy named Frank Caunce … in the 1965 - 72 period who was very good but not as organised as you. So keep doing what you are doing.”
Barry Martyn, New Orleans
“Very pleased to be associated with Jazz & Jazz. It promises to be be an influential contribution not just to the UK but to any one anywhere capable of accessing it. My Old Green River Band is delighted to have the opportunity to register its gigs and geographical whereabouts and to see the results this must have for all those associated.”
Martin Bennett, The Old Green River Band
“Fantastic Peter, you've got a talent for capturing people! Perhaps I need to have a shave!!!
