Satchmo “Colorized”!

For my Jazz Friends, especially Yoshio and Keiko Toyama*, wishing you all a splendiferous New Year for 2016 in its entirety!

Up until the 1970s, color photography was extremely rare. History prior to that time was captured in black and white. Today’s technology enables us to “colorize” our favourite photos, and as these photos of Louis Armstrong show, the results can be spectacular.

Keyboard Virtuoso Craig Milverton “Remembers April”

Craig’s dynamic keyboard solo “I’ll Remember April” with The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band at Olney Jazz Club in November, 2015.

Filming live at gigs doesn’t afford opportunities for “Take Two” reshoots and I have discarded many of my movies which, for one reasonor another, fell fractionally short of perfection – not on the part of the musicians but due to the cameraman. In this number, Craig’s keyboard virtuosity is brilliant, even though I marginally clipped the beginning as I focused my magic lens.

So this movie qualifies as one of my “If only Take Two” YouTubes and very worthily so!

“Yellow Dog Blues” The Bateman Brothers at Olney Jazz Club

W.C. Handy’s “Yellow Dog Blues” performed in the style of Louis Armstrong by
The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band at Olney Jazz Club in November, 2015.
Ian Bateman tells the story.

This feature is for a very good, longstanding friend in Monrovia, LA, who recently told me it’s one of his favourite Blues numbers.

Looking Ahead to 2016 at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth

Occasionally, I have been criticised for featuring jazz only in my own locality!

If you explore Jazz&Jazz thoroughly I’m sure you will agree this is not the case. I help promote jazz not only close to home and not only in the UK but on the Continent, in America, Japan – in fact worldwide. But obviously no way can I myself globe trot for jazz. I have to rely on submissions from festivals, clubs, bands, musicians and fans from around the world.

But I would love to be able to cover jazz further afield myself and film YouTubes of bands playing in a variety of locations. Just today I received this message: “Congratulation on the thriving news feed you are providing for us jazzers, and thanks for the hard work that must be involved!” I replied, “Frankly I’m looking into honest ways of raising a dime or two to help finance my efforts.” Why? Because then I would be able to reach out in person more often way beyond my own locality.

Sorry to digress but I thought it a good opportunity to get this message across at the same time as promoting the variety of jazz bands booked to appear at one of the several clubs within striking distance of home in the first six months of 2016. And this is just one of Tad Newton’s jazz venues.

Youthful Exuberance at Fest Jazz, 2014

Quote from the YouTube

“Joan Chamorro’s brilliant young St Andreau Jazz Band musicians at Fest Jazz, Châteauneuf-du-Fao, in 2014.

“This clip falls under my “Take Two” Category of YouTubes because although I filmed the entire number, so many dancers took to the floor that they totally obscured much of the performance. So, much as they demonstrated the exuberant Fest Jazz atmosphere, I edited the dancers out. After all, no chance of “Take Two” at live gigs!

“The St Andreu Band are starring again at Fest Jazz, 2016: Be there!!!”

Jazz&Jazz “Take Two” YouTubes of “Jesus on the Mainline” Baby Jools & The Jazzaholics

With no opportunity to reshoot when filming live at jazz gigs,
I have discarded many of my movies which, for one reason
or another, fell short of perfection.

That is until I decided to feature them as “Take Two” YouTubes – i.e. performances which I would love to have filmed again.

This feature of Baby Jools & The Jazzaholics playing at The Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth, is a case in point. Judge for yourselves whether it has been worthwhile featuring “Jesus on the Mainline” in two parts!

A Premonition? “Hesitation Blues” – Baby Jools & The Jazzaholics

Jazzaholics

Jazz is on the verge of a revival!

Baby Jools and Chris Tanner are two young stars championing the cause.

So let’s not hesitate! Lets back them along with the many other 21st Century jazz musicians and bands featured on Jazz&Jazz and their new generation fans. And, heh, you oldies, time to debunk the doom and gloom demise of jazz negativity. Time for all you loyal fans to get young at heart again!

I’ll shortly be posting on Jazz&Jazz: “Jazz and Jazz&Jazz are on a journey but need your support!” Please watch out for it and overwhelm me with your responses.

Meanwhile here’s “Hesitation Blues”.
