Colin Bowden, Drum Genie Supreme!

High time Jazz&Jazz paid tribute to our magnificent master drummer, Colin Bowden,
who has brought joy to jazz fans for so many decades.

Master Drummer Colin Bowden at Hemsby, 2012

I last spoke to Colin at Hemsby Autumn Jazz Parade back in 2015 when I filmed him on drums with “The Festival New Orleans All Stars”. The band also included Ken Sims on trumpet, so sadly recently departed.

As long ago as September, 2012, I set my mind to painting a portrait of Colin but fear that to this day I haven’t yet put brush to canvas. In my earlier feature entitled “Full Focus on Jazz Drummer Colin Bowden” I even asked fans to select their preference from one of four of my photographs of Colin.

So it would be wonderful if you could revisit that feature – just click on this link – to make your choice, but then post your preference in “Comments” at the foot of this post.

More about Colin.

Legendary jazz pianist Erroll Garner, when he got excited about the playing ability of another musician, he used say ‘who chi coo’. He explained it as meaning a ‘magnificent obsession’. I’d say both were in that category. Or, put more simply ‘just amazing’.

Picture number one, by the way.

Our wonderful dad died 1st August, 2021, unexpectedly but peacefully. It’s a terrible loss, but what he gave us all is immeasurable.

  4. Peter Butler says:

The response to his death is flooding in. I enjoyed photographing and filming him.

  5. Mick Rayner says:

Yes it’s a great loss but his memories through all the bands he played with live on.
