I spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening at Donna’s Bar on Rampart Street during the French Quarter Festival back in 2010 when I first met Leroy. Sadly not long after the venue closed down. But when Leroy and Katya toured the UK I was delighted to catch up with them in The Arena, St Albans (see the link below).

It’s five years since I met Leroy Jones in New Orleans at Donna’s Bar during the
2010 French Quarter Festival.

He won’t remember me now, but when I asked him if I could take photos, not just one or two, but a whole selection for a portrait I aimed to paint of him, he was happy for me to do so. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then but I finally got to the portrait so here it is. Next on my list, KatjaToivola at Donna’s Bar. By the way, is Donna’s Bar still there on Rampart Street?

Focus on New Orleans 2010 & 2016 Part 2

Changes in New Orleans: Jazz&Jazz photographer Laurence Cumming visited New Orleans in May this year and captured a series of magical photographs which inspired me to revisit the photos I took six years ago during the 2010 French Quarter Festival.

Part 1 of “Focus on New Orleans 2010 & 2016” was published on Jazz&Jazz in July this year.

Here is the continuation of our “Then and Now” New Orleans Photo Story.

I first met Leroy Jones at Donna’s Bar back in 2010 shortly before it’s closure. One of the photos I took on that memorable night later became the reference for my portrait of him, with a touch of artistic license of course.

Laurence goes for close ups, ideal for capturing “Street Shots”. Heads, shoulders and instruments. Many of the photos below are of musicians from “recently emerged”
New Orleans Bands. Some of them I know – some are members of my
Facebook “Jazzers Group”.
But it would be interesting to see how many of them readers can identify.

Leroy Jones’ UK Tour Brings New Orleans to The Arena, St Albans

Leroy at Donna's Bar, New Orleans

Leroy (trumpet) and Katja (trombone) at Donna’s Bar, New Orleans

I first met Leroy Jones and Katja Toivola at a swinging session in Donna’s Bar on Rampart Street, New Orleans, during the 2010 French Quarter Festival. Sadly Donna’s Bar is no more, but I had asked Leroy if he would mind me taking photos for
publication on the web.

So when I learnt about his current UK Tour I swiftly booked for his St Albans Concert in The Arena Theatre on Thursday, 29th October.

And what better opportunity to recapture above that magical night at Donna’s Bar way back in April, 2010, with just three of the photos I took during The French Quarter Festival –
PLUS the YouTubes below which I filmed of Leroy and his Quintet’s spectacular concert at
The St Albans Arena.

By the time you read this it may already be Friday, 6th November, but there’s still time to catch the tour’s last three concerts on 7th, 9th and 11th November.

So PLEASE seize the opportunity and go for it! Who knows when next you’ll get the opportunity to see “The Keeper of The Flame” in the UK?:

“This music is happy music. It makes you feel good!”: Leroy Jones

I hadn’t seen Leroy Jones since I met him in Donna’s Bar, New Orleans, back in 2010.
So when I learnt about his current UK tour I seized the opportunity to get to get to his
St Albans concert on Thursday, 29th October.

Am I glad I did because it was so worth the journey south from Bedford. In fact it was the first time I had been back to The Arena Theatre since I was President of The St Albans Chamber of Commerce back in the early 1990s.

Leroy&PMB

Leroy I know but who’s that with him?

Without doubt, a keepsake!

Without doubt, a keepsake!

It’s quite a challenge filming for quality YouTubes of jazz bands and musicians during live gigs. You’re never sure which number is coming up next and of course there’s no chance of  “Take Two” opportunities. The band simply plays on whatever the cameraman’s dilemmas. Even so I captured some excellent footage which will be featured here on Jazz&Jazz as soon as the YouTubes are produced.

Meantime I simply had to post this YouTube of Leroy speaking to the audience because it is right in line with my aims and objectives of promoting jazz against all the odds of the stream of X-Factor numbers swamping the sound waves these days.

Leroy Jones, “The Keeper of the Flame”

‘Legendary jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones is known to music lovers as the “Keeper of the Flame” for traditional New Orleans jazz and to critics as one of the top musicians ever produced by the Crescent City.’ (Spirit of New Orleans Productions)
Leroy is also featured on the Preservation Hall Jazz Band site.

I got to meet the “Keeper of the Flame” at Donna’s Bar and Grill on Rampart Street, New Orleans, in April, 2010, before its temporary closure. I asked him if I could take a series of photos of the band and upon showing him some samples of my jazz portraits, he graciously agreed, though I doubt he remembers me amongst his throng of fans.

And I’ve still to complete his jazz portrait!

So I thought it high time I featured Leroy on Jazz&Jazz along with the photos I took at Donna’s Bar and another which I took of him in a trumpet duet with legendary music man and song writer supreme, Dave Bartholomew, at Nina’s Palm Court Jazz Cafe on Decatur Street.

Ikos at The Alleycat

Three years ago I painted Dom Pipkin’s portrait on keyboard with The Fallen Heroes and since then I’ve constantly promised myself to to take in an Ikos’ gig.

So I was elated to make it to The Alleycat in Denmark Street, London, on May Day along with my daughter Susie, her partner Antony and Brian Smith (Promoter of the Welwyn Garden City Peartree Monday Jazz Club) for Dom Pipkin & the Ikos’ New Orleans Music Shop.

The gig couldn’t have been better named, reminiscent as it was of jazz and jam sessions in New Orleans in bars such as Frizzells and Donna’s Bar, to name just two. PLUS Dom and the Ikos have a whole bunch of YOUNG fans!

Dom isn’t only a great showman and brilliant pianist but also has a charismatic, outgoing personality and I want to thank him for giving Jazz&Jazz a huge plug during the Music Shop.

When I photograph musicians for my jazz portraits I concentrate on capturing their defining characteristics, their nuances and peculiarities. I did no less when photographing the Ikos for a selection of images for future portraits.

So here are Dom Pipkin and The Ikos and some of their “jammers”.
