Fest Jazz Brittany 2019 Presents a Dream Line Up: 26th/28th July …

… Here’s how and why you should book quickly!

Gunhild Carling

Fest Jazz Welcomes Back Gunhild Carling!

Since she took Fest Jazz by storm two years ago, Gunhild has moved to San Francisco (for the Post Modern Jukebox). Initially her agent said Fest Jazz would be out of the question this year.
But Trevor Stent contacted her directly and she so loved Fest Jazz that she is coming back!
As well as being a “tornado” on the stage, Gunhild is also a very fine jazz musician with
exquisite phrasing – sometimes overlooked as some dare to describe her as
“just a multi instrumentalist show woman”.

Book early for Fest Jazz and judge for yourselves!

The Eva Fernandez
Trio

We are welcoming back Eva Fernandez who, as a young saxophonist, stole hearts alongside
Joan Chamorro and Andrea Motis during Fest Jazz 2014.

Then…

And now …

Prokhor Burlak & The Canal Street Band

From Russia Fest Jazz have discovered soprano sax player Prokhor Burlak who plays with
the young Canal Street Band from France. Here he is playing in Moscow.
Another Fest Jazz discovery!

Playing alongside Prokhor in the Canal Street Band will be the brilliant young French stride pianist
Jean Baptiste Franc

Fest Jazz 2019 also presents The Big Easy

Another young band with a very appealing singer!

The Mama Shakers are back…

following their successful initiation to Fest Jazz 2018 but with a slightly different line up:

Dorine de Wit…

makes a welcome return to Fest Jazz but with her new band, “Roadkill”!

Adding a touch of spice, The Sweet Peppers…

another wonderful young French band!

Bannan’Jug

An all-girl group discovered when Good Time Jazz were playing in the south of France.

Malo Mazurié

returns but in traditional jazz mode. He is playing with Bernd Lhotzky a German stride and
ragtime pianist with amazing technique and swing:

Tad Newton’s Jazz Friends

    Hi Peter,
From a purely personal viewpoint, may I thank you very much for this run-down of acts appearing. It seems to me that, just like last year, the greatest problem will be selecting the acts to see, knowing full well it will mean you miss others.

It is a superb festival, and looked forward to a lot. Plus at my age, the extra seating reported seems an improvement, and sometimes the dancers being in front of the performers were distracting, although I am pleased they will still be there, just not in direct line of sight..

For me it will be a particular pleasure to see and hear a full set from Eva Fernandez, who alas I was unable to get to when she appeared at the London Catalan Jazz Festival last year. Just wish there were more of the ‘graduates’ from the Sant Andreu Jazz Band performing, but I guess you cannot have everything.

  2. Trevor Stent says:

    Hi Peter,
We are really pleased you are coming again to Fest Jazz this year. The programme is eclectic with some good young grouops, up and coming performers and established stars. Have a look at Sarah McCoy, originally from New Orleans but now based in Paris https://youtu.be/2hZ2VKaQzu0 . A great voice! She will be there on the Sunday.

Yes, it will be good to see Eva Fernandez again. In 2014 she shone brightly at Fest Jazz alongside Andrea Motis and has since embarked on an impressive solo career. We will certainly talk to her about getting a Saint Andreu “all-star band ” for Fest Jazz 2020.

Mélanie, Nora and Camille, our young organisers, have unveiled the poster for this year on Facebook and reaction has been good. Angelina yesterday ordered more chairs too so the older fans will be happy. The marquees are reserved and the wine has been ordered… what more could a jazz fan want?!

  3. Peter Butler says:

Trevor, Why not ask Melanie, Nora, Camille and Angelina to prepare and sent me a Fest Jazz follow up to feature on Jazz&Jazz perhaps for posting in a couple of weeks. I truly wish I had assistants like them to help with Jazz&Jazz because I’m inundated with requests for features now. Just take a look at recent posts – including one for a NO festival (I met Tonya Excho when in New Orleans in 2010).

I’m grappling with a need to ask for contributions for posts. That would do one of two things – help me finance my endeavours and get help or ration input and thus ease the workload.

That said, helping promote Fest Jazz is “my favourite”!

    Peter

  4. norman gibson says:

Trevor is aware that, with the greatest of regrets, we will not be able now to make it this year. Moving house shortly is just one of the reasons, and, you know Peter, Fest Jazz is also my ‘favourite’, and I too do everything I can to sing it’s praises far and wide. And, I would add, it’s tremendous value for money.

  5. Peter Butler says:

    You will be missed, Norman.
