Dréo de Lille’s Stunning Rendition of Oscar Brown Jr’s “Dat Dere”

During their April, 2017, UK Tour, Old Chaps Jazz Band from Lille, France, starred at
Tad Newton’s Walnut Tree Jazz Club, Blisworth, Northants, where I was privileged
to film several numbers for YouTubes.

Dréo’s rendition of Oscar Brown Jr’s “Dat Dere” was immensely compelling, even spellbinding!
One of those rare occasions of being in the right place at the right time to
capture something very special.

Accompanying Dréo are Louis Thomas (Trumpet),
Romain Dsrx (Sax), Vince Evrard (Guitar), Benoît Luchier (Bass),
Nicolas Wroblewski (Drums).

Dat Dere” is a jazz song written by Bobby Timmons and first recorded in 1960.
Lyrics were written by Oscar Brown, Jr. for a 1960 recording.

Excellent singer, horns, bass & guitar (shame the drummer couldn’t find the off beat!)

  2. tad newton says:

HRH really improving on the alto!…a great honour Sir!…Bonzos??

  3. Peter Butler says:

Close to giving the game away, Tad! Discreet reference to Bonzos. When I showed this YouTube to my daughter-in-law she took some convincing that it wasn’t HRH!

  4. Norm888 says:

I swore my audience to secrecy on Friday 7th April, before the ‘Old Chaps’ came on. So, if ‘Her Maj’ gets wind of what her wayward grandson is up to now, it didn’t get out from our neck of the woods !
Romain is a nice guy by the way – in fact, they all are. It was great to get them on.

  5. Peter Butler says:

Really glad you featured Old Chaps way up north during their UK tour, Norman. AND, before he appeared at The Walnut, Ginny and I both thought for a moment or two that HRH was on stage at Fest Jazz last year!

  6. Norm888 says:

HRH was definitely at FestJazz last year. He was the one change to the line-up from 2015, when Old Chaps were a surprise hit with us all. And, Gunhild Carling will be tops this year, but I feel ‘The Sweet Peppers’ are going to be a nice little surprise for us !
With the Roscoff coach pick up, B & B accommodation, Festival weekend rover ticket and venue transfers, all for 220 Euros, now on offer , we should see a significant increase in UK visitors. Those jazzers from in or around Plymouth have a great opportunity to get on down there !
