Announcing The Jazz Repertory Company’s Forthcoming Events

Orchestra

Natalie Hunt recently wrote to me:

Dear Peter

I work for the drummer and music director Richard Pite at PartyJazz/ The Jazz Repertory Company and he has pointed me towards your website Jazz and Jazz. We’re both incredibly impressed with the amount of work you’ve put into creating such a full and informative site and wonder if you would consider affording our forthcoming Cadogan Hall concerts any space?

We have Jazz In New York: The 1930s coming up on the 19th September and a huge Paul Whiteman two show extravaganza on Sunday 22nd November as part of The London Jazz Festival.

It would be wonderful if there was a way to have these shows mentioned on your site. I have included links below.

Kind regards, and many thanks,

Natalie

After such a wonderful message, Natalie, I simply had to “afford your concerts” space on Jazz&Jazz. And what better way to do so than to feature the web links you directed me to.

An outstanding musician and a remarkable man, who, over 50 years ago, went from England to New Orleans because of his love of jazz and his desire to learn how to play it for real. He actually stayed there and is now one of the Crescent City’s most respected musicians, where his own NEW ORLEANS SERENADERS are regular fixtures at all the New Orleans festivals, and at two of the city’s most celebrated jazz haunts, the Palm Court Cafe and Preservation Hall.

Tommy has toured widely in Europe and the USA and has played at major international jazz festivals, including numerous appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Along with Clive he is often seen leading his own group at Preservation Hall.

Clive Wilson has assembled a great line up of veteran British jazz musicians to complete this touring version of the New Orleans Serenaders. They are:

Rare Footage of Tuba Skinny at Fest Jazz 2014

Erika2
Back in July, 2014, Tuba Skinny were one of the star bands at
Fest Jazz in Brittany

Barely had they flown into France and arrived at in Châteaneuf-du-Faou than they played at a pre-festival party in the informal of setting of the legendary Bar Tal ar Pont to welcome spectators and musicians for the weekend.

Tal-ar-Pont
I was privileged to film Tuba Skinny throughout the Festival but have only now decided to feature three more my YouTubes of them taken at their magical Bar Tal ar Pont gig. The bar was packed, lighting wasn’t the best, and to avoid vexing the fans I filmed from a position at the back where I was as inconspicuous as possible.

Even so, having just taken a fresh look at the footage I’ve decided it’s magical enough to merit releasing. Watch out for the tale of the borrowed Tuba!

Tuba Skinny are: Erika Lewis (vocals, bass drum), Shaye Cohn (cornet), Todd Burdick (Tuba),
Jason Lawrence (Banjo), John Doyle (Clarinet), Barnabus Jones (Trombone),
Robin Rapuzzi (Washboard)

If you go to “SEARCH JAZZ & JAZZ” (column to the right) and enter “Tuba Skinny” you will find other posts featuring Tuba Skinny YouTubes).

Davis Rogan Brings “Treme Shakedown” to London

Treme-Shakedown-BannerAlt

“It’s Saturday night on Frenchmen Street, New Orleans. In the Spotted Cat Music Club, the crowd is grooving to the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues inspired sounds of singer/pianist Davis Rogan and his band.

“Yes, indeed,” says Treme resident Davis just before the show starts, “And here we go!”

“They open with “Junco Partner”, a local standard recorded by the likes of Professor Longhair, James Booker and Dr John.

Davis-Keyboard

“That’s our show opener,” Davis said. “I love New Orleans rhythm-and-blues tradition and, obviously, the piano players and the funk and the passion. It’s real.”

Borderline-Logo

Davis is bringing “Treme Shakedown” to
The Borderline, London on 11th September.

Add Dom Pipkin & The Ikos, the UK’s very own rhythm-and-blues specialists, to the mix and we can be sure of a top rate show stopper. The Iko’s will be backing Davis for his headline performance, and Dom will join him on stage for a few numbers so we will have the joy of two pianists on stage at the same time.

The Programme details read:

Davis-Rogan-Piano-Pose• Experience true Southern funking deep from the Crescent City with this one-off exclusive gig featuring piano renegade Davis Rogan (immortalised in HBO’s TV series ‘Treme’ as the inspiration for DJ Davis).

• With support and band backing from the mighty Dom & The Iko’s (“lighting up the British RnB scene” – Paul Jones, Radio 2), this is the unmissable sound of classic New Orleans straight from the source.

 • No one does New Orleans music like Mardi Gras Mambo – the London guardians of the New Orleans groove hosting the most authentic NOLA parties this side of Bourbon St. With DJ Lil’ Koko (one time resident of the Treme), spinning rare brass, RnB and swing cuts throughout, this promises to be the hottest yet.
