JAZZ&JAZZ: Helping Keep Jazz Live and Alive!

A day or so ago a colleague commented on Jazz&Jazz: –

“The vast majority of those you go to Jazz Festivals are mostly OAPs on limited finances. I am no different, so it’s fair to say that the vast majority of those visiting festivals throughout the country tend to be very selective, and of course as it is in life, want best value for money. I am afraid festivals (and clubs) will struggle to survive as the number of Jazz supporters dwindle year on year – sadly”

Despite this recurring belief that Jazz has had its day, it simply isn’t so! People say the musicians and fans are past their sell by dates and don’t attract younger audiences. Again, not so! There is a Jazz Revival! Numerous younger bands with growing numbers of enthusiastic young fans are making their mark – here in the UK, on the Continent and in the USA. But they tend to be selective with their venues, preferring clubs and festivals which attract younger followers and growing – not declining – fan bases.

Whenever the opportunity arises Jazz&Jazz features such bands and festivals. But the real trick will be to ensure continuity because, as we all know, the senior musicians and bands have so much to offer – so much to hand on to their aspirational successors. This isn’t just down to one group or another but to cooperation – joint participation – at all levels.

Jazz&Jazz is dedicated to keeping jazz LIVE AND ALIVE and to acting as a live online link between the jazz generations, valuing exchanges of views on all things jazz. In fact a young musician said to me just recently that he could see Jazz&Jazz as a catalyst for bringing the jazz generations together and furthering these goals. You can make your thoughts known in the Comments Sections below this and any Jazz&Jazz post. So don’t hold back – have your say!

The Social Media

Jazz&Jazz uses and cross references to the Social Media to further these goals. So to outline the full scope of the “Jazz&Jazz Online Campaign for Jazz” below are the associated social media Jazz&Jazz websites – most of them open for interactive involvement.

P
lease watch out for an announcement soon on another Jazz&Jazz Campaign to achieve these goals.

Featuring Jazz in East Kent at “The Star” and “The Horse & Groom”

No chance to while away the time during my Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival weekend.
Or rather should I say, every chance to while away a pleasant evening and afternoon
filming at local hostelries before the main events.

Because precursors to the big event were jazz at The Star, Old Wives Lees, on Thursday evening, 9th July, and at The Horse & Groom, Ramsgate, on Friday afternoon, 10th July. Moments to savour meeting up with old friends.

VocalionStar

My YouTubes (below) of Vocalion Jazz Band at The Star feature Dennis Jenkins on trumpet, Gerry Birch on bass, Kenny Sanderson on banjo, Mark Alexander on drums, Dick Smith on clarinet and Jan Bryce on trombone. I was please to chat with Jan during the evening about his father Owen Bryce whom I was delighted to meet not long ago when we discussed, not jazz but the comparative virtues of Scottish Malts and American Bourbons!

VocalionStar2

At The Horse & Groom (below) I filmed “Southern Heat” with Ray Colyer (trumpet), Graham Majin (sax), Alan Salsbury (banjo) and Tony Richards (tuba). Not the easiest venue for YouTubes due to the bright, sunlit windows, tight space in the crowded bar and especially friendly fans taunting me for obscuring their view of the quartet! All in a days work!

“A Night in New Orleans” at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle with Trefor Williams

Night-in-NO

Fans are always pleased to welcome Trefor Williams back to Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle. He could almost be described as a festival founder member!

Here he is on Bertha, his beloved Bass, with, as he might put it, “His Usual Suspects”, for “A Night in New Orleans” with Ian Turner (Clarinet), Mick Stansell (trumpet), Malc Murphy (Drums), Sid Bailey (Trombone) and  Andy Maynard (Banjo).

Enjoy the YouTubes!

Isle of Thanet Hosts Frog Island Jazz Band at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle

Frogs
Always popular at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle, Essex-based Frog Island Jazz Band got the festival off to resounding start with their Classic New Orleans Jazz of the twenties and early thirties – Joe King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodd’s et al.

Their visits to New Orleans brought them the ultimate accolade of having the title ‘International Honorary Citizens’ conferred upon them. If Shuffle Fans had their way The Frogs would also have ‘The Freedom of Ramsgate’ conferred on them.

John Whitehead, Trumpet; John Jeans, Trombone; Jim Hurd, Clarinet, Saxophone; Chris Marchant, Drums: Keith Durston, Piano: Brian Lawrence, Banjo; and the illusive Rob Fullalove, Sousaphone (Rob will understand!)

As ever their music tells the story:

The sun shone, the bands played, the brollies paraded and Ramsgate’s Beauty Queen and Princess smiled for the cameras. Jazz fans revelled in the events and onlooking holiday makers and local residents were enthralled by the fun and frolics!

I overheard one happy parent say to his youngster, “This is old time jazz! From New Orleans.
It’s great fun!”

Without doubt The Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival, now just in it’s fifth year, is putting New Orleans Traditional Jazz back on the map in the UK’s far south-east. So I want to pay tribute to the small but very active organising committee for their sterling work. They prefer to remain incognito so I’ll introduce them only by their first names, Ron, Chris, John and Paul.

Tony Richard (tpt), Dave Corsby (clt), Martin Rawbone (tmb), Nick Rawbone (dms), Neil Francis (bass), Dave Robinson (vibes)

“Richard’s Rascals” played on the Sunday, not quite such a bright day but “When You’re Smiling” made all the difference: Tony Richard (tpt), Dave Corsby (clt), Martin Rawbone (tmb), Nick Rawbone (dms), Neil Francis (bass), Dave Robinson (vibes).

Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle is

The
Summer Fun Festival!

Take Red Hot & Blue’s performance on a blazing July Saturday afternoon – ready to strip off at the outset!  And just as I was about to film them in their smart white jackets. Witness for yourselves the results on this YouTube. I simply couldn’t get my lens camera up to par in time – hence my objections and the shaky start. Great fun and despite the theatricals, great music!

Only at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle!

But later they condescended to my request to film them fully clad – yet again catching me on the hop so that I missed the opening bars of “The Postman’s Lament” – and my comment that sitting right next to me was, not Postman Pat, but Postman Pete – an avid Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle fan.

Where else but at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle!
