Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Launches Jazz at Court Stairs with the Gambit Jazzmen

Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle launched its 2012 programme with a fantastic evening of top rate trad jazz courtesy of Pete Lay and his Gambit Jazzmen at Court Stairs Manor & Country Club on Friday, 25 February.

The historic manor house provided a magnificent setting and incredible acoustics for the fans who turned out in force to support the Shuffle, the Band and of course, the bar!

Pete Lay closed the evening by warmly congratulating the Seaside Shuffle Committee for their successful launch of their 2012 season. Full details about the Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival in July and forthcoming monthly gigs can be found under Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle 2012 Events: Latest News & Updates on the July Festival and Monthly Gigs.

Announcing DAVE PRICE SWING THING

It’s here! It’s NEW! Banjoist David Price has launched David Price Swing Thing, “a truly swinging affair” starring Dave on Mega Banjo, Tim Huskisson on piano/clarinet, Roger Curphey on double bass and Henry Harrison of Winchester Cathedral fame on drums.

Swing Thing is a professional quartet that’s different to the usual run of the mill and when it comes to David’s Mega Banjo and it’s unique, amplified yet mellow sound – along with his crooning vocals – hearing is believing!

The quartet plays a selection of great jazz classics along with Broadway standards – with some very interesting interpretations.

Essex based, the Quartet is prepared to travel!

Jazz Portrait of Frog Island’s Chris Marchant on Drums in New Orleans

JAZZ PAINTING OF CHRIS MARCHANT ON DRUMS IN NEW ORLEANS

Chris Marchant is renowned for his powerful drumming with the Frog Island Band from deepest Essex.

I first met Chris in New Orleans where I captured him for this jazz portrait putting on the style at The Music Factory on Decatur Street. Since then Chris and I often crossed paths at Welwyn Garden City’s Peartree Monday Jazz Club and now at Lemsford Jazz Club where the Frog Islanders are tops with the club’s loyal fans.

From Jelly Roll to King Creole, The Frog Islanders Take The Peartree by Storm

The Frog Island Jazz Band hit the heights yet again at the Peartree Monday Jazz Club, Welwyn Garden City, on 20th February.

Always favourites with Peartree fans, the Frog Islanders set the pace with their dynamic repertoire of 1920s and 30s jazz, from Jelly Roll Morton’s Red Hot Peppers to King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band. Formed back in 1962, the band hails from deepest Essex except for local lad, clarinetist Jim Hurd from Potters Bar.

Watch this space for a special Jazz&Jazz feature on the 50th Anniversary of The Frog Island Jazz Band coming soon.

Keith Durston (piano); Jim Hurd (clarinet); Dave Price (banjo); Rob Fullalove (tuba); John Whitehead (cornet); Chris Marchant (drums); John Jeans (trombone)

With repertoire superb
New Orleans jazz, shaken and stirred!

Formed way back in 1962, The Frog Island Jazz band hails from deepest Essex and throughout the years has remained faithful to the classic New Orleans jazz of the twenties and early thirties. They appear regularly at UK jazz clubs and on tour in Holland, Belgium and Germany. The Frog Islanders were favourites at the Peartree Monday Jazz Club in Welwyn Garden City and this portrait captures them enthralling the club’s devotees. They are now favourites at The Lemsford Jazz Club which has superseded the Peartree.

Jazz Portrait: Grand Marshall Jimbo Heads the Parade

JAZZ PORTRAIT OF GRAND MARSHALL JIMBO HEADING THE BROLLY PARADE

Many jazz festivals just wouldn’t be the same without the imposing presence of Grand Marshall Jimbo heading the Brolly Parades. Come rain or shine, Jim Pack never fails to set the pace for the musicians in his wake. In this jazz painting Jimbo is stepping out at the head of the bands and fans at anAutumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby, Norfolk.

Skipping to the rhythm
Dapper and trim
Grand Marshall Jimbo
Leads the parade
Dazzling with gusto.
New Orleans Jazz
And brollies on show.

Braced against a cool October breeze, sprightly Grand Marshal Jimbo leads the Umbrella Parade at the Ken Colyer Trust 2008 Jazz Festival in Hemsby, Norfolk, where Good Time Jazz was enjoyed by one and all.

Portrait of Esther O’Connor, Songstress Supreme, Potential Jazz Queen

ACRYLIC PORTRAIT OF SINGER/SONGWRITER ESTHER O’CONNOR

Forget Simon Cowell and the X Factor. Scottish singer/songwriter Esther O’Connor has done it her way, and these days that’s a breath of fresh air. The daughter of Graeme Duffin, bassist with Wet, Wet, Wet, Esther has her own band, Ashton Lane.

It’s been said that Esther has a “hard to classify style”. Yet she’s equally at home with pop, country, rock and folk. The Sunday Times said of her “She is a talent that harks back to the great singer songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s.

So why not Jazz, Esther?

JAZZ&JAZZ PORTRAIT OF ESTHER

Esther Enthrals Her Fans

Hail the new kid on the block,
No chip, but pure golden rock.
A musical queen and songstress supreme,
Thrillingly fulfilling her dream.

I mulled over painting a portrait of Esther for some time, wanting to be sure I could capture her in enraptured performance. Then, watching and listening to her, discovering her values and following her rise to stardom as both singer and song writer, I could resist no longer.
