One of my Favourites – Laurie Fray on Clarinet

Jazz Painting – Laurie Fray in solo on his Selmer St Louis Bb Clarinet

When Laurie Fray commissioned his jazz portrait playing the clarinet, I needed look no further for reference material than my jazz photograph of his stunningly moving rendition of George Lewis’s “Burgundy Street Blues”.

Beautifully played on his Selmer St Louis Bb Clarinet, it lifted and added class to a lively jam session at the 2011 Autumn Parade in Hemsby, Norfolk, where I was privileged to watch him patiently mentoring a young clarinetist acolyte. Entranced by Laurie’s passionate performance, his jazz painting commission was a joy to fulfil. At the time, Laurie played reeds with Anything Goes Thames Valley Jazz Band.

The Pinnacle of Passion

Clarinet and clarinetist
Entrancing, possessed,
Passion personified,
In a consummate quest
For tonal perfection
And rhythmical zest.

Sammy Rimington Stars in Canterbury

Sammy Rimington International Band at the 2011 Canterbury Festival

Sammy Rimington and his International Jazz Band starred in the magnificent setting of King’s School’s historic Shirley Hall on 17 October during the Canterbury Festival. Joined by Fredrik John (trombone), Emile van Pelt (piano), Norman Emberson (drums), Eric Webster (banjo) and Trefor Williams (string bass), the band’s legendary repertoire of New Orleans jazz classics reverberated around the brilliantly acoustical setting from front of stage right up into the gallery. Jazz fans were enthralled and concert goers captivated by the band’s matchless range.

The Canterbury Festival billing was just one of eight shows during Sammy’s 2011 Annual UK tour.

For more about Sammy’s band see: https://www.jazzandjazz.com/2011/04/sammy-rimington’s-international-jazz-band/

Frenchmen Street Jazz Band

In the course of booking them for the 2012 Autumn Parade at Hemsby, Norfolk, Pete Lay introduced

Chris Pearce’s

Frenchmen Street Jazz Band

to Jazz&Jazz. So what better than to feature the band here and at the same time give some advanced publicity to The Autumn Parade billed for 28th September to 1st October, 2012.

Chris Pearce’s Frenchmen Street Jazz Band

Left to Right: Tony Davis, Trumpet; Graham Smith, Drums; Roger Davis, Bass; Chris Pearce, Leader, Reeds; Phil Probert, Guitar/Banjo; Richard Leach, Trombone.

Over the years, Chris starred with numerous bands before forming the Frenchmen Street Band in 2002 after a trip to New Orleans when he stayed above the famous “Snug Harbour” Jazz Club on Frenchmen Street. So now you’ve got the connection!

You can discover much more about Chris and his band on their website at: http://www.chrispearcesfsjb.co.uk/index.html

All that remains is for an early opportunity for Jazz&Jazz to capture The Frenchmen Street Band on camera, perchance to be added to the growing list for future portraits.

Full details about the Autumn Jazz Parade can be found under Autumn Jazz Parade 2012.

Live at the Peartree Monday Jazz Club

Chris Tyle on Cornet at Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle

Head Honcho with Style. Jazz painting of Chris Tyle on cornet.

My jazz photograph capturing Chris Tyle on stage at the 2011 Ramsgate Seaside Shuffle Festival inspired my jazz painting and portrait of his superlative improvisation.

I presented my jazz portrait to Chris at the 2011 Autumn Jazz Parade in Hemsby and was delighted with his response: “Why, you’ve even added some PR for me in the summary!”

Chris Tyle isn’t only a virtuoso on cornet, drums and clarinet, he’s also a noted jazz historian, educator and raconteur supreme. Based in Portland, Oregon, he is a frequent visitor to the UK where he plays with the Gambit Jazzmen so I may yet be privileged to paint his jazz portrait on drums or clarinet. If ever you get to meet Chris, be sure to ask him about the onstage antics of legendary Jack Teagarden’s saxophone “mechanic”.

Fans Bask in Autumn Jazz Parade

Penn on E flat clarinet with the Rae Brothers

“Celebrating the Ken Colyer Heritage”, The Autumn Jazz Parade at Seacroft Holiday Village in Hemsby, Norfolk, has always presented a gold mine of stars for Jazz & Jazz Art and this year was no exception.

Fans revelled in the glorious October heat wave and clear blue skies but were not tempted to miss any of the bands which included Colin Kingwell’s Jazz Bandits, Gambit Jazzmen, Golden Eagle Jazz Band, New Orleans Wiggle, New Orleans Po’ Boys, Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band and the Savannah Jazz Band. Guest stars included Annie Hawkins, Ray Smith, Colin Bowden, John Crocker, Eric Webster, Trefor Williams and American jazz superstar, Chris Tyle. Plus this year’s rising star and pianist with the Rae Brothers, 21 year old Ian Wynne,

Special thanks go to Pete and Jill Lay for organising yet another spectacular Autumn Parade, to Mike Pointon both as musician and compere and to Jimbo and Penn for their unstinting support.

So what better way to celebrate the festival than with a selection of Jazz&Jazz photos taken of the bands appearing at the festival. See also Jazz Stars at Autumn Parade under JAZZ BANDS.
